I pressed my hand against my collarbone, tracing the outline of the birthmark through the thin fabric of my nightgown. It was just a mark. I had been born with it. I had hidden it my whole life because Melvin's elders told me it was a sign of my cursed blood. But what if they were wrong? What if it meant something else entirely? My eyes grew heavy.
