Maya's Pov I woke up to someone jumping on my bed. Again. "Merry Christmas! Get up, get up, get up!" Sophie was worse than a five-year-old on Christmas morning. She wore pajamas with reindeer on them and a Santa hat that kept sliding off her head. "What time is it?" I groaned. "Seven. Come on, we open presents at seven thirty. Family tradition. No exceptions." She bounced out of my room, leaving me alone with my messy hair and complete lack of holiday cheer at this ungodly hour.

It would make her look suspicious. "Yes, of course." She immediately changed her answer. And in one swoop the man had already held her hands and took her to the dancing arena. "I love this song." The man said as he intertwined his hands in that of Amanda swallowing herself. They were perfect, just like his clothes, like her hands were meant to fit into his. The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss II – was the song being played. It’s one of the most famous waltzes ever written and often associated with ballroom elegance and high-society gatherings.

She even made me wear long heels. It was dark inside. The flickering Christmas lights only did little to illuminate the space. It was cold too. Too cold, but nobody seemed to care. My eyes fell on the giant Christmas tree by the door. For the first time in my life, the sight of a Christmas tree tugged at my guilt. I was still staring at its bright colored red and green ribbons when someone suddenly grabbed it, yanking it off its stand. Then two n***d sweaty bodies came crashing against the glass door.

And Noah, in front of everyone, let go of my hand to pass a gift box to Heidi. "Heidi, your Christmas present." Heidi excitedly tore it open. When she pulled out the worn pocket watch inside, she pouted. "Noah, you're so rich. Why are you giving me something this old?" Noah smiled without answering. But I froze completely. I'd seen that pocket watch before, in the portrait of Noah's late father.

A storm behind the smiles. Maybe it was me. Maybe it was him. Lena shot across the room like a chaotic missile, skidding into me with a hug that knocked the breath from my lungs. “Jesus Christ, you look like a Disney princess who failed the survival side quest,” she said, tugging my hood down. “Did he cheat with a girl?
