EMBER’S POV “DEAL,” Queenie announces, at a volume clearly designed to break up whatever is happening between us, clapping her hands together with enormous cheer. “Okay! Wonderful! It’s decided! Ember’s a feral heiress shopping for rough trade; Knox is her devastatingly jealous bodyguard who’s going to assault the staff; Devika’s the madam of a crime lord’s brothel floor, and we are all going to a rogue casino, and there’s a doll of Knox somewhere getting pelted with eggs. It was early spring, and the water was freezing. Ember choked on mouthfuls of water and surfaced, trying to climb out. But every time she grabbed the edge, a bodyguard shoved her head back under the water. Again and again, she tried—only to be forced down each time. She watched as Ryker arrived. When he saw her struggling, he stood there coldly watching.

The door opened. A man in his fifties. Tall, the specific build of someone who had been athletic at some point and had carried the posture of it forward into the years that followed. Dark eyes that assessed things quickly — Knox recognized the quality of the assessment because it was the same quality Ember had, the same direct taking-in of a situation before responding to it. Ember's father. "Yes," he said. "My name is Knox Rivers," Knox said. "I am a friend of Ember's. I apologize for the hour. I need to speak with her."
