His arms tightened around me, like he braced himself for an answer he wouldn’t like. I shifted, my eyes searching out his gaze, pondering why the question. “You’re my second,” I admitted. Just as I started to wonder whether he considered me lacking, a deep grumble of satisfaction sounded deep in his throat. “Good,” he said without elaborating. “I’ll be your last.” Bu-bum. Bu-bum. Bu-bum.

He eventually found the book further down the row and read from it ; he looked beautiful with his entire focus on the pages. I went back to working on my case review, which was due the day after that. I was lost in my writing when I heard him nearing me. I expected to feel the bump of his ass again and was ready to soak in the pleasure, when he stopped near me and talked to me : “Second to last day already. I hope you liked your stay here.” I could hear from his voice that contrary to before, he was no longer with his back turned to me, we were facing the same direction. For some reason I didn’t look and kept my head down to the pages.

Not the way he expected. Even my heartbreak hid itself. Even my suffering refused to give him satisfaction. When the tears finally slowed, I took a shaky breath. “This is the last time,” I whispered into the darkness. “The last time I let this destroy me.” I didn’t believe it yet. But saying it made breathing possible again. Because later, much later, I heard what happened on the other side of that door. Zara had leaned in again, stroking his jaw. “Now, where were we?”
