"You were engaged to Logan. That means you belonged to my family. Going back on your word is shameless."
"Engaged?" I laughed softly. "Where was the bridal set required for an engagement?"
She choked.
"There were supposed to be seven pieces," I continued. "Every year, one was missing. I waited seven years and never received a complete set. You gave me nothing, yet you expected me to marry into your family and work like a servant."
The people around us began whispering.
"The Carneys really did go too far. Every year, they said the silver was ready, and every year, one piece was missing."
