Gina said viciously. "You can't kill me," I said, pushing Gina back as hard as I could. She stepped back until her feet fell into a pit. The pit appeared to be a trap set by a hunter in order to catch his prey. The surface of the pit was covered with weeds and could not be seen. I heard Gina's cries of pain from the pit, so I knelt on the edge and looked down. The pit was deep and dark, and I could see Gina wriggling under it as if she'd been bitten. Then a long shadow flashed before my eyes. When I see clearly. A thick, triangular-shaped snake spits its red tongue at me in front of my eyes.

The snakes moved very slowly, and when I took a few steps forward, I heard some hisses, but they were too tired to reach me. Once I was sure they wouldn’t strike, I moved a little closer. At the center of the pit were a few snake eggs. I shuddered. Just beyond me, I spied a large tarp. I walked over and grabbed it with my free hand and then made my way back to the pit. I flung the heavy covering over the pit. The fabric was dense enough that the snakes weren’t going anywhere.

Then— “Where do you think you’re going, human?” Another ugly bastard. He grabbed me by the hair. “You’re going to die here. No one’s saving you. Not even your mutt.” I clenched my teeth, feeling the blood, the pain, the grief. My babies… they were gone. I knew it. And then—I saw it. The snake. It came out of nowhere and lunged at him. Sank its fangs into his neck. His eyes changed colour. Then—it crushed him. Snapped his spine in half like a twig.

"There were snakes, Andrew, serpentine creatures that slithered through the ruins. They attacked without warning! Dante... he tried to fight them off, but they overpowered him. I couldn't... I couldn't save him!" The weight of her admission was a leaden force pressing down upon me. I felt bile rise in my throat, despair colliding with fury. Grabbing the metal dolly off the wall, I swatted away the spider webs and got to work wedging the platform beneath the bottom of the first barrel. “Yeah, yeah. I’m not happy about this either.” I said in response to the snakes veracious hissing. The snake pit was a measly three-minute walk from the sheds. I stuck to the outskirts of the camp, avoiding the recruits as they went to and from their training courses, conserving my energy for what was to come. Why they couldn’t pick a simple garden snake was beyond me, but what did I know? I was just the help. Thinking he was getting on, I moved to the side to give him room. “Oh, this was too easy.” The man spoke with a chilling voice and chuckled as he placed a foot inside the elevator, without stepping in fully. The doors attempted to close, but with the man’s foot blocking it, they opened again. I didn’t recognize the man, but I was sure that he didn’t work at Wolf Tech. Although I had never seen him before, I knew who he was instantly. The tattoo of a snake that circled his neck and up the side of his face was a dead giveaway. Also, the live snake that hung over his shoulders was another clue. I wasn’t sure why the man known as Snake was here, but I had a feeling it wasn’t good.

I focused for a split second, and one of the pits closed with an unhappy squelch. The tentacles hastily retracted, but one didn’t make it and remained on the ground, squirming like a snake cut in two by a shovel, and about as dangerous as that snake. I would have to take care of it later; no need to throw away valuable ingredients. Or should I gift it to the Church? The second pit started folding in on itself as well.

Damn it, this wasn't an action movie. I growled at something very rude, fasted my M19 harder, and sprinted down the sidewalk on this side of the street. I never let our prey out of my sight for a moment. It was almost like a slalom. Again and again I had to avoid people and then I almost ran into a shelter. There was room for a handful of people in these small buildings. If you had to get to safety from a prole, you could run in there, seal the room and call the venators from inside via an emergency column.

Something was off. The air had a scent. Not blood. Not smoke. Something... living. Coiled. Waiting. I turned toward the far edge of the room and froze. There, nestled under the edge of the pelts, was a snake. Long and scaled, its eyes glowing faintly gold in the firelight. It wasn’t a normal snake. I didn’t need a seer’s vision to feel that. It was death wrapped in scales. I didn’t scream. I couldn’t. Every part of me locked down as I slowly slid off the bed, hand still pressed over my stomach.

The dark snake pit was eerie, and the damp air was filled with a nauseating smell. Countless pythons wriggled their thick bodies at the bottom of the pit, making a creepy hissing sound. Cold, sticky sweat broke out on my back in waves. The kidnapper walked to the opening, his fleshy face trembling slightly with anger. "Celeste Chandler! It's all because of your husband! Your husband's company cost me everything. I have a mortgage to pay, and my parents are waiting for me to save them. How could you live so comfortably?"
