The cover is worn, soft under my fingers, like someone's held this book a lot and loved it. I open it carefully, turning the pages one by on, and then it happens again. A voice. My voice. Soft and sad and so familiar it makes my chest ache. "Love is so short, forgetting is so long." I hear myself saying those words. I don't know when. I don't know where. But I said them. I meant them. I close the book hard. My knees buckle. I slide down the shelf until I am sitting on the floor, my back pressed against the stacks, the book still clutched in my hands.

She swiped through the pages slowly, reading every detail and trying to hold back the tears threatening to fall from her eyes. She read each page until she stopped at a page with red ink. I press the book to my chest and sob, rocking back and forth like a child. “You stupid girl,” I hissed at the heroine. “If I were you, I’d have saved him. I’d have shown him he was worth something.” My fingers clench around the cover. “I wish I were you,” I whisper, bitter and broken. “No one will ever love me like Luke Thorne did you. No one. I wish I were you.” I throw the book across the room. It smacks the wall and slides to the floor. Home is hell.

The book wasn’t here, yet the words burned clearly across my vision. My breath ceased. I could read the message written on the page. This is not the first time it has happened.

She always tried to seem strong in front of me and now she let her walls crumble a little. " Oh my God sweety, I never wanted you to see me like this. I wished that this moment would never come but I guess wishes don't come true. Seeing as how everything I have ever wished for never came true I would say enough with the wishes." The first pages of the book were typically a story of my mother's childhood, teenage life and all that, nothing worth reading. But as I went further, my eyes caught a text written in bold letters. “The one to mend the bridge between two worlds.” “What does that even mean?” I scoffed, reading further. After about ten minutes of glancing through each page aimlessly, I was fed up. “This is trash,” I muttered, closing the book. “Waste of my precious time,” I added, my face twisted in a frown. But just before I dropped the book, a little paper fell from it, landing on my thighs.
