Its form shifted and writhed, never quite solid, never quite real, and the darkness around it seemed to pulse like a living heart. "I am the end," it hissed, its voice echoing across the pass, bouncing off the mountains, filling every ear with dread. "I am the darkness that was before light. I am the hunger that cannot be sated. I have existed since before your moon rose, since before your world was born, since before time had a name." It pointed at Lena, and the gesture seemed to shake the very foundations of the mountain. "And you—" it continued, its burning eyes narrowing. "You are nothing. A spark in the darkness. A candle trying to hold back the night. You will fade, as all things fade.

I followed her. “Reed is neither a god nor mortal. Neither a wolf nor human. His glory awaits him but to shake the heavens itself he must go past through his darkness. Levi asked, frowning deeply. “Yes. Exactly. Dark is present non-uniformly in every inch of the space, but it’s all linked together like a limitless fabric of darkness. Darkness is not nothingness. And that’s what makes this kind of communication so robust,” she said. “So you mean to say that as long as a place has darkness, this system’s gonna work?” I asked.
