Window. I scrambled to my feet, adrenaline spiking. The window was low, just above the sloping roof of the porch—a perfect escape I’d used as a kid. I shoved it open, cool air hitting my face as I swung one leg over the sill. The book went into my hoodie pocket, heavy against my side. I slid out, my sneakers scraping the shingles as I dropped to the grass below. Ben’s beat-up sedan idled at the curb, headlights off. I ran to it, yanking the passenger door open and sliding in.

Anna's POV I glanced out of the window, the rain pelting against the glass in a relentless symphony. The storm mirrored the turmoil in my heart as I tried to make sense of the events that had unfolded over the past few days. My life had taken an unexpected turn, plunging me into a dangerous game of survival. It started innocently enough, with strange occurrences that I dismissed as mere coincidences. A missed step on a slippery pavement, a close call with a reckless driver. But as the incidents piled up, their sinister nature became apparent. I was being targeted, and my life was in grave danger.

Jane I sat by the window of my house. It had been a year and three months, and I had let go. My babies were growing well; they were six months old, adorable and peaceful. As much as I was heartbroken, they filled my heart with a different kind of joy. Sometimes I would tell them stories about how their fathers saved me from the evil green dragon. I knew they were too little to understand what I was saying but told the stories anyway. In those moments, I was happy. James and Philip might have abandoned me on earth, but I wasn't alone. They gave me two beautiful sons I would love with all my heart, and I was grateful for it. I was staring out my window when a strong breeze hit my face. I close

“You’re imagining things. Or maybe you’re just remembering things too sharply. It’s a full moon summer night—you know how that amplifies everything.” Marianne swallowed, eyes narrowing. “It’s more than the moon. You know it. Don’t act like you don’t.” Elena hesitated, then let her gaze drift toward the window. Outside, the sun had vanished entirely, leaving the yard and the porch in deep purples and golds, silhouettes shifting, faint voices carrying on the warm wind. She knew exactly what Marianne meant—the tension, the unspoken truths, the history hiding just below the surface.

My room looks like my parents have preserved it as such from the day I walked out. My taste in décor has never grown from childish and cute; stuffed animals litter my bed, and shelves are filled with teen romance books and trinkets. Arrick has seen this room a million times and pulls me to my silver-gray chaise longue in front of the huge window, evicting fluffy pillows and blankets as he plonks me down harshly.

I was glad that was where I started when I found the window overlooking the patio unlocked. I took a moment to look out at the glowing moon. It wasn’t that long ago that all it was to me was beautiful. Now, it meant so much more. I quickly remedied the situation and then continued on. When I was satisfied that I’d checked all points of access on the basement level, I headed up to the main floor. There were a great deal more windows and doors to contend with and it worried me. If Godwin’s spell weakened at all, they could easily break the glass on one of the many oversized panes that were installed to provide a panoramic view of the mountain and enter the house.

With a groan, I smash the stone through the window beside the door. The glass shatters. I reach through carefully, unlocking the door from the inside and pushing it open. Finally. I really hope the journal is here. Dusting my hands, I enter inside the building. The entire place looks so empty and there are cobwebs hanging from the roof and windows. On my right, the wall cabinets are dusty, their glass doors reflecting the weak sunlight coming through the broken windows. Far ahead, the examination table in the center of the room is covered with a white sheet that is also dusty and filled with cobwebs.

I heard the fire move, consuming everything moving upwards, and towards us rapidly. “Alpha?” Zara called. “Now!” I ordered, lifting Reuben. She turned, running out. I ran through the hallways, fire swift behind us, then I caught a door, slightly opened. “This way!” I kicked the door open, ran into it and located the large window in the room. I heard sounds of broken glasses from other rooms ahead. “Hold onto me tightly,” I said to Rueben. The fire came up rapidly, engulfing the room. I jumped out the window simultaneously, landing on the gravelled floor. Pain shot through me. Rueben rolled off my back, falling on the gravelled ground.

When they ran towards the window to see what was going on, they met pitch darkness, which could obscure anyone's vision, even from seeing their own toes. "What do you think that was, Miss Milburn?" Patrilia asked, looking around him. "I don't know. It may be wild animals. Don't forget, we are not staying in some fucktown or rural house. "We are spending another night in this goddamn mountain, full of trees, wild animals, and beasts." She chuckled, going to her own room.

I leap over the broken chair piece and over the table, shifting into my magnificent wolf once more. Just like last time, it's effortless and smooth and with my new speed and size, manage to claw into his back just as he shifts and launches himself through the window. I’m about to follow but the moment I reach the window, something blocks it and I hit a wall, and am thrown back, accidentally inhaling the acidic gas that makes my stomach burn agonisingly. I glance at the window, realising the wolves outside have blocked it. I run at the window once again. That wall will not hold me in!
