I’m Doe” Doe smiled and stretched her hand to him, which he shook to my surprise, “ Daniel” he said and smiled back. I raised my brow at him, “ Wow, look at you being all polite” I mocked, “ Well she’s pretty” he answered and winked at Doe. An arm circled Doe’s waist, “ And taken” Tobias said with a warning look. He had bandages running from over his left shoulder to his torso, but he was fine. Danny smiled in amusement, “ Just saying” he said.

I tried to stand again and grunted with the excruciating pain. “Little One” a voice called from the other side of one of the cabins. I whipped my head in the direction the voice came from and squinted. The morning sun was starting to brighten up the sky, which helped me spot a pair of legs lying on the ground around the corner. It was the gigantic pair of bare feet that made it click. Tobias. What is he still doing over there? Roe said he was hurt, why wasn’t he taken to get help? I whipped my gaze back to Gunner who was dealing magical blow for blow with Whiskey. He appeared to be handling himself fine, for the moment at least. But it wouldn’t last. He is strong and determined, but he isn’t

With the wind on my side, my paws barely met the ground as I flew towards Toby. My eyes widened when I saw Toby swinging the rogue by its neck with his massive jaws. I slowed when I heard his neck snapped and then Toby threw his dead body at the side. “No need to worry about me, Gus. The Tobester can handle himself.” Toby puffed his chest and patted over to me proudly. “OK, but you're still a loser,” I snickered. “You know I would beat you if that filthy rogue didn't attack me,” he boasted.

I picked up my water glass and took a long drink, letting the cool liquid soothe my suddenly dry throat. Tobias was quiet for a few minutes. He pushed his rice around his plate, seemingly absorbed in his own thoughts. Then, without looking up, he tapped his metal fork against the edge of his ceramic bowl. “Just out of curiosity,” Tobias said, his voice dropping the teasing tone and becoming perfectly casual. I swallowed the water and looked at him. “What?” Tobias finally looked up, his eyes locking onto mine with terrifying accuracy. “Does the guy you absolutely will not talk about play for the university team?”

“I’m just beginning.” Then he dropped to one knee, slammed his palm against the ground—and the earth shook. A ring of fire exploded outward, engulfing Harrow. The scream didn’t last long. But neither did the light in Tobias’s eyes. He collapsed forward. I ran to him. “Tobias!” He looked up at me, blood trailing from his mouth. “It had to be done,” he whispered. “No,” I said, shaking him. “We could’ve saved you—” “Too late,” he wheezed. “Listen.”
