I woke up screaming, red eyes burned into my mind plaguing my dreams, it felt so real like I was being torn apart all over again, bite after bite after bite, I felt it all over again. “If you’re trying to apologize to me, you should look up at me while doing so, don’t you think?” Tyler’s entire face was red—I wasn’t sure if it was from embarrassment or the fact that he couldn’t breathe. He looked at Alaric, his eyes pleading while Alaric expression was stoic. He narrowed his gaze. “You heard her.” Just then, Tyler’s knees buckled and he lowered himself to the floor. Only then did Alaric unwrap his fingers from his neck. Tyler coughed out air as he tried to catch his breath. And then he turned to face me. “Meadow, I had no idea, I swear. I didn’t mean—”

Sunlight streaming through stained glass windows, painting everything in colors—blue and gold and red. And at the end of it all, Tyler. My hands returned to the steering wheel, gripping it so tightly it felt like if I let go, I would collapse. At a red light, I stared at my reflection in the windshield. My face was pale. My eyes were swollen. I barely recognized myself. “I’m coming, Nick,” I whispered. “Wait for Mommy.”

I dragged my suitcase through the airport, New York's air hitting me, familiar yet foreign. A loud wolf whistle caught my attention. "Welcome back, New York's sexiest artist!" I spun around to see my best friend Clara Willow leaning against her flashy red convertible, her blonde hair catching the sunlight like spun gold. I stopped a few feet away and watched him fall apart. Inside, I was calm. Still water. No anger. No pity. Not even disgust. When you've really let go, the other person becomes a stranger who happens to talk. A dry branch cracked under my shoe. Tyler stopped crying. His whole body went stiff. Then he turned, slow and stunned. The second he saw me, his eyes blew wide. Tears slid down his face. He tried to stand, but his legs had gone numb from the cold ground, and he slipped backward into the mud.

Mr. Ronnie knocked on the door and everyone started to go back to their seats. My eyes caught someone that I knew since I was a kid, it's Xander. He entered the classroom with Mr. Ronnie and automatically he got a lot of stares and winks from the girls in our class. I turned my head to Serena and she shrugged.
