“You’re a really great tour guide, you know that? I mean it. Have you ever considered starting up your own business?”
I rolled my eyes at him. “Very funny. Okay – well, this here is the bakery. I reckon you’ll get a kick out of this. So it’s owned by a man called Jean-Claude. He’s from Brittany, and he makes you order in French. And,” I added, laughing to myself – I’d not realised how bizarre Jean-Claude’s bakery was until I’d begun describing it to a newcomer, “if you get it wrong, he won’t sell anything to you. Well – if he’s in a good mood, he’ll purposefully give you something else. But most of the time, he just gives you this glare, like you’ve affronted him, and he kicks you out.”
