He asked me, calling me out. I admitted it completely with a shake of my head. “Afraid not. He took the books in his other hand and placed them in my hand that he was holding and closed my fingers around them. “I said that I found some books still in my book case that Nonna used to read to me at bedtime and thought you might read one of them to Nate tonight.”

He looked at me eagerly. "Yes, you can." I grinned, hugging my legs to my chest as he opened the drafts. I watched his face intently as he began to read, his pupils moving in a gradual horizontal manner until they moved down and repeated the action. "Okay, I can't watch you read my book." I stood up and he looked up at me. "I'm gonna go visit Chris or something." He furrowed his eyebrows, "Are you going to visit Chris or 'something'?"

He asks. “Mommy’s ok. She’s just a cry, baby.” Zayne walks up behind us with a smile. I roll my eyes at him, but I can’t stay because I know this was his idea. I tapped my thighs, and he adjusted himself on the couch, with his head on my thighs. I ran my fingers through his hair and picked up the book. “My mom used to read them to me. It’s one of my favorite stories.” “I want to hear it…” I opened the first page, my hand was still in his hair, and I started reading to him.

"How about…" he met my eyes, "...you read to me?" I nodded. "Well, I guess that's not too bad but, you better not get bored listening to me talk," I warned him, walking over to select a book.

"Good. Because you always have to be here. I need you to always be here. " "Always. " He promises before he leans down to press his lips to my forehead. "Come on. You should go back to sleep, or do you want to stay up and talk?" "Can you read to me?" I ask him, and he smiles, pulling my cheek before he drops my body gently to the side to grab the book that's by my bedside. “You’re going to be fine. The healers have all agreed that the cure is taking effect, and I will stay with you until you wake up. We’ve gotten this far, we’ll get through this, together.” I ran my hands over his body, stretched the blanket, and fluffed up the pillow under his head. All seemed to be stable, and I snatched the book from the top of the nightstand. It was the one he used to read out loud to me as a child. I thought that maybe, just maybe, reading it back to him would get through to him in a way that my own words hadn’t. I leafed through it, settling into the words. Time just seemed to slip by, easy and slow.

“I appreciate the felony.” He didn’t smile fully, but the tightness in his shoulders eased. He surprised me again when he sat on the bed beside me. Not close enough to touch. Not close enough that I could feel his body heat. Just close enough that I could feel the shift in the mattress under his weight. The storm murmured against the window. The faintest rumble. I flipped the book open. Before I could read the first line, he spoke. “Read to me.” My heart stuttered. It was such a simple request, yet it shook me to my bones. No one had asked me that since my daughter. No one had wanted my voice for comfort. No one had leaned into me, wanting to hear me read.
