I’m almost afraid to touch anything in this room.” “I know you’ll be careful with my things.” She nodded and pulled the book off the shelf. “I didn’t know you liked Jane Austen.” “Why not?” She shrugged. “She’s a woman author.” “I’m broad minded enough to think women have a lot to offer society. I enjoy her work.” “This is one of my favorite books. Sense and Sensibility. The story of two sisters who represent two opposing forces: logic and emotion.” He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. He seemed to be considering her analysis of the book. “I didn’t think anyone else in Virginia understood that.”

Pride and Prejudice. "Really? Jane Austen? I thought you'd have found some new novel for me! You were always complaining about looking for expanding my horizons." "And you were always going on about classics, Fifi. Come, sit here and read the book." Adi scooted over as he made space for her to sit but the sheer action of getting into bed with him made her tremble. 'Please remember that you are not a virgin, Fifi! You don't have to be so on edge!" Faith reminded herself failing to realize that she was addressing herself with the nickname he used.

I wanted to read, to do something that reminded me of normalcy. I looked at my growing shelf of books and decided to pick Pride and Prejudice. It was one of my favorite books as I was a sucker for romance novels. I flipped to the first page and began. "It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."

"His gift?" "Yes. It should have arrived last week. A rare first edition of 'Pride and Prejudice.' He mentioned it was your favorite." Jane's favorite book was "Valley of the Dolls"—she'd never expressed interest in Jane Austen. This was a test. "Oh, that gift." Lyra scrambled for a response. "Yes, it was... wonderful. Please thank him for me." "You can thank him yourself tomorrow," Amelia replied. "Good evening, Mrs. Blackwood."

I swear that this guy moves like a ghost. I sat down on the couch, I realised that there was a book on the table. I took it and it was one of my favourite author, it was Jane Austen and it was a first edition. I can only wonder how much it must have caused. Pride and Prejudice will always be my all time favourite literature. All in all I can say that being married doesn't seem to bad from where I was standing.

The warm glow is enough for me, as my feet shuffle towards the books. All first collections. My fingers reach for their spines as I go from row to row, my eyes getting even wider as I move. Jane Austen’s first collection. To Kill a Mockingbird. Pride and Prejudice. Crime and Punishment. Ulysses. The Great Gatsby. These had to have cost a fortune. I reach the end of the top row and grab a book. Jane Eyre. A door cracks open in a corner, but it sounds so far away that I don’t move. Until a second later when I hear footsteps right behind me.

"HAZEL!!!!" The shouting of my mom downstairs startles me out of my reading journey, leading to my ever-so-favourite Pride and Prejudice drop on the wooden floor. It is the third time I am reading this book and Jane Austen has never grown old. How amazing it was to live through people's hearts even when you had been buried in your coffin a long time ago? The door slams open and in comes my mom with blazing blue eyes that can scare away dinosaurs if they existed in the twenty first century.

"I believe it has its own value. I've always had a passion for reading and writing." Grandma Ellie jumps in, eyes sparkling. "Oh, how wonderful! I love literature. Do you have a favorite author, dear?" I smile sincerely upon her excitement. "I'm quite fond of Jane Austen. Her insights into society and character are timeless." "Ah, a classic choice," Harold puts in, nodding appraisingly. "Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece." Rebecca leans back in her chair, swirling her wine glass reflectively. "Personally, I find those stories a bit dull. All that talk of manners and marriage prospects. Don't you think, Pamela?"

Inside it is a box, I lift the lid off of the box to reveal a collection of books with titles I instantly recognise. "Jane Austen's books, all first editions" Rhode tells me softly as I pull my hand back away from the covers, just as I was about to touch them. I can't believe it, I can't believe they're just here in front of me, just sitting in my lap. "No way" I gasp quietly and look up at him in disbelief. These must have cost him a fortune, on top of being nearly impossible to track down. Tears are immediately springing to my eyes, a very regular occurrence for me these days.

Nostalgia hit me like a train. “It's still here…” I whispered, picking up another book. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. I flipped through the pages, inhaling the faint smell of old papers. “It's all here, Andrew.” I croaked. “I know…” he whispered. “What do you two want?” A haggard voice asked, walking close to us. My eyes landed on a wrinkly figure, a cane to balance her as she walked closer.
