Then, he disappears into the bedroom to answer the call—leaving the three of us sit in utter silence.

Emmet heard Dimitri cry out and he immediately stopped and placed his hand over his mouth, afraid he would make a noise.

He did a double-take at the rooms peeking at him below the charred border that should have been covered by the roof. Oh, what the fuck? Emmett glanced warily at the car parked beside him. Gritting his teeth, he pushed open the car door and let the fresh air enter his nose. Walking up the front steps, his fingers trembled when they wrapped around the doorframe. “Franklin? It’s Emmett. Emmett Kinley. You . . . you in there, man?”
