Lara Dela Cruz was a normal girl—well, normal in the sense that she was an overworked call center agent who hated her boss, loved iced coffee, and had mastered the art of sarcasm to survive the horrors of capitalism. But one night, while rushing home, she slipped on a puddle (thanks to her horrible luck) and hit her head hard on the pavement. When she woke up… she wasn’t in her world anymore. Instead, she found herself in a medieval kingdom, in the middle of a chaotic slave auction. And before she could even scream in protest, she was bought by the most feared man in the entire empire—Duke Alistair Von Nacht, also known as the Tyrant Duke. Now, instead of dealing with rude customers, she had to deal with an emotionally constipated warlord who could kill her with a flick of his fingers. But what’s worse? She might be falling for the grumpy tyrant.

Chapter 1: Accidentally Time-Traveled?!

Evelyn's POV

I should have known something was wrong.

Looking back, the signs had been there all along. Adrian's unanswered calls. His delayed replies. The tension in his voice whenever I mentioned the wedding during the last few days.

I told myself he was simply overwhelmed.

As the CEO of one of the country's largest investment firms, his life revolved around billion-dollar deals and endless meetings. Whenever I worried, he would smile, kiss my forehead, and whisper, "Just a few more days, Evie. Then you'll be my wife."

I believed every word.

Now I stood behind the towering oak doors of St. Augustine Cathedral, wondering if love had made me blind.

The church was breathtaking. White lilies lined the aisle, crystal chandeliers bathed the marble floor in warm light, and ivory ribbons decorated every pew. Nearly five hundred guests had gathered—business leaders, politicians, friends, and family—all waiting to witness our happily ever after.

Yet beneath the soft murmur of conversations lingered an uneasy silence.

I tightened my grip on my bouquet of white roses.

My mother had always dreamed of seeing me carry them on my wedding day, but cancer had taken her three years earlier. Before she died, she'd squeezed my hand and whispered, "Find someone who chooses you every single day."

I thought Adrian was that man.

The satin gown fit perfectly, every pearl and crystal carefully sewn into place. Months of planning had led to this moment.

Today I was supposed to become Mrs. Adrian Thorn.

A wedding planner approached with a reassuring smile.

"Miss Hart, everything is ready."

I nodded before asking the question weighing on my heart.

"Has Adrian arrived?"

Her smile faltered.

"I'm... sure Mr. Thorn is on his way."

On his way.

Those words should have comforted me, but they only deepened my unease.

Adrian hated being late. He once fired an executive for arriving twenty minutes late to an important meeting.

So why wasn't he here?

I turned to my maid of honor.

"Chloe, have you heard from him?"

She glanced down at her phone before quietly answering, "No."

"I've called him six times."

Straight to voicemail.

I forced myself to breathe. There had to be an explanation.

My father's voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Evelyn."

He walked toward me in the tuxedo we'd chosen together months ago. His eyes filled with tears as he adjusted my veil.

"You look exactly like your mother."

My own eyes burned.

"I wish she were here."

"So do I."

He hugged me carefully.

"No matter what happens," he whispered, "remember that you deserve happiness."

I smiled.

"What could possibly go wrong?"

A chill crept down my spine the moment the words left my mouth.

The organ began to play.

The cathedral doors opened, flooding the entrance with light.

"It's time," the wedding planner announced.

My father offered me his arm.

"You ready?"

"I've been ready for three years."

Together we walked down the aisle.

Guests stood smiling, some wiping away tears. Phones rose to capture the moment.

I searched for only one face.

Adrian.

As we approached the altar, I saw the priest... the best man... the groomsmen...

But Adrian wasn't there.

Confused whispers spread through the cathedral.

Then the enormous LED screen behind the altar flickered.

The music stopped.

A crystal-clear image appeared.

A luxury yacht floated on brilliant blue water surrounded by reporters and cameras.

Then I saw him.

Adrian.

He wore the same custom tuxedo we'd chosen together. The silver cufflinks I'd given him for his birthday gleamed in the sunlight.

Relief washed over me.

Maybe this was a surprise.

Then a woman stepped beside him.

Vanessa Sterling.

The glamorous socialite whose face appeared on magazine covers.

She looked at Adrian as though no one else existed.

A cold knot formed in my stomach.

No...

Adrian reached into his pocket.

My heart stopped.

He dropped to one knee.

"I've waited long enough," his voice echoed through every speaker.

"Vanessa... will you marry me?"

She burst into tears.

"Yes!"

Applause erupted across the yacht. Champagne corks flew into the air as Adrian slipped a massive diamond ring onto her finger.

Then he kissed her.

Long.

Passionately.

Without hesitation.

Across the bottom of the screen appeared the words that shattered my world.

BREAKING NEWS: Billionaire Adrian Thorn Announces Engagement to Socialite Vanessa Sterling.

Silence filled the cathedral before whispers erupted.

"Oh my God..."

"Isn't today his wedding?"

"What about the bride?"

Someone began crying.

Others lifted their phones—not to celebrate a wedding, but to record my humiliation.

My bouquet slipped from my hands.

White roses scattered across the marble floor.

Yesterday Adrian had texted me.

"Sleep well, future Mrs. Thorn."

He'd told me he loved me.

He'd promised to meet me at the altar.

Every promise had been a lie.

Beside me, my father's grip suddenly tightened.

"Evelyn..."

His voice sounded weak.

I turned and saw the color drain from his face.

"Dad?"

His hand flew to his chest.

Fear shot through me.

"Dad!"

His knees buckled, and he crashed onto the marble floor.

Gasps echoed through the cathedral.

"Call an ambulance!"

"Someone help him!"

Guests rushed forward while others simply stared.

I dropped beside him, my wedding dress spreading across the cold floor.

"Dad, please..."

I clutched his hand.

It felt terrifyingly cold.

His eyes opened for only a moment before closing again.

Tears streamed down my face.

"Please don't leave me too."

Someone shouted that a cardiologist was among the guests.

People surrounded us.

The photographers kept filming.

The media kept recording.

No one looked away.

To them, this was the biggest story of the day.

To me, it was the end of everything.

The man I loved had abandoned me before the entire world.

My father lay unconscious beside me.

My wedding dress was soaked with tears.

And somewhere across the ocean, Adrian Thorn was celebrating another engagement.

He had destroyed my future...
