Three. I finished reading the book and checked the time on my watch. 17hrs13min. Could it be that John was awake? I left the room and went upstairs for the thousandth time of the day, and when I got close to John's room, I stopped when I heard his voice. He seemed to be on a call.

I see the time on my cell phone. 11:00PM. I'm sure mom will be worried, and as if I had summoned her an incoming call from her lights up my cell phone screen, I slide my finger to answer and put the phone to my ear to talk to her. “Allie, where have you been? It's eleven o'clock at night! Do you know how dangerous it is out there at this hour, come back this instant!” “Mom, take it easy. I'm fine, I was just leaving. Don't worry, I'll be there in ten minutes. I'll be there in 10 minutes,” I say calmly.

BELLA’S POV He was on the call for twenty-three minutes. I know because the library clock was there and I had stopped pretending I wasn’t tracking it. Twenty-three minutes of his voice behind the study door, the low measured quality of it, the words not arriving but the register arriving, the specific texture of a conversation that was not comfortable. Not a fight. Something more controlled than a fight, which was sometimes worse. I turned four pages without reading them. On the fifth I gave up and closed the book.

Then I set the book down on the window table and looked out at the January street and thought about ten days and active patient waiting and a man who had underlined nothing but had handed me exactly the right page. Renee appeared from the kitchen. She looked at the book. "He left you a book," she said. "A poem," I said. "Page forty-seven." She picked it up. Read it. Set it down. She looked at me with the expression that lived between exasperation and affection. "Ten days," she said. "Ten days," I said. She went back to the kitchen. I picked up the book and held it in both hands and thought about a man at a bookstore counter in October asking Carol for something specific and Carol disappearin

“Just one more chapter.” She hesitated. “My lady… the master has been waiting close to three hours.” That made me pause and slowly, I looked up. “What?” The words came out sharper than I meant. She repeated it gently, like she was afraid I might throw something. “The master has been waiting.” I blinked again. Three hours? My eyes shifted toward the window behind her and i saw it was completely dark outside. “…Oh,” I muttered. Time had just… evaporated. I sat there for a second longer, still holding the book then I frowned. “I was going to go,” I said quickly, like I needed to defend myself from imaginary accusations. “I just—this book is good.”

Zezi looked at the cover, it was just a black hardcover with 'Time of Darkness' written in a large zig-zag red font. "What is the book about?" "History." Delice shrugged while she picked a book off the shelves, putting another in its place. Wasn't that like, going to mess up the order of the books? She had bigger things to worry about right now though. "How long ago? A hundred years? Two years? A thousand?" "10 years ago was the end of the datk times. It lasted more than that though." With a book in her hand, she started swaying to an empty seat by the window side.

If I still have an hour and I can't sleep well, that's why I come here to just read a book to relieve boredom. “a thought inducing read” Regardless, I didn’t put the book down till I was done. When I looked up, it was late, and I hadn’t even realized that I had been reading with the automatic sensor lights that had come on. My watch revealed that it was almost eight pm. I had been reading for almost twelve hours. I grabbed my laptop and opened it. Fifteen minutes later, I had ordered ten thousand copies of March Madness. I had only stopped at ten thousand because that was all that was printable at the moment.

And oh, I had no idea how bad my burn is going to be. ************** MONDAY My eyes flickered from the book in my hand to the clock hanging on the wall across from me. I sucked into a deep breath of air and turned my attention back to my book. Three hours later and I repeated the same exact action, noticing that the time has only increased three freaking minutes.
