She wondered, staring at her ceiling in the gradually deepening darkness as night approached, what exactly Billings had known, and whether he'd realized, in the final moments of his life, that he'd gotten too close to something he should never have gone near. She looked at the clock on her phone and did the math without meaning to, the way she'd started doing every night now — five hours left, then four, then three, whittling down toward the one number that had stopped feeling like a time at all and started feeling like an appointment. All I did was brace myself for the worst and hope my defense would hold. The entire house was eerily quiet when we arrived. It was still the early hours of the evening, at about 6 pm. The time I was here, 6 pm, was dinner time. Everybody would have come down and the house would’ve been alive with chattering and sounds of cutlery against plates. But that wasn’t happening.

Aria’s POV The fluorescent lights of the 24-hour Super-Mart hummed with a depressing, low-frequency buzz that matched the state of my nerves. It was 11:14 PM. Damon was still "at the office"—though after my trip to 5th Avenue, I knew that was a flexible term—and the twins had finally succumbed to a bout of teething-induced exhaustion. I was standing in Aisle 4, staring at a box of Glitter-Puffs.

I said, picking my things up. It was 3.25 p.m. Arriving early wouldn't hurt. What the hell does this woman want from me!? She's the dumbest blonde I've ever come across period! I made my way into the sports complex and headed towards the swimming pool on the second floor. 3.27 p.m Maybe Brittany is very punctual and she works right on time! God!
