Torvin stayed, his old eyes fixed on the stranger, his hand never straying far from his weapon. "Who are you?" Torvin asked. "My name is Aldric." Kael's heart lurched. "That's my father's name." "I know." The old wolf smiled, revealing teeth that were yellowed and worn. "I was named for him, in a way. Or he was named for me. It's hard to remember. It's been so long."

Then, slowly— The wolf shifted. Bone and muscle reshaping as fur receded. A tall man stood where the wolf had been. His hair was streaked with silver, his amber eyes sharp beneath thick brows. Rose stared. “You’ve been watching.” The man nodded once. “For some time.” Kael stepped forward slightly. “And you are?” The stranger’s gaze moved between them. Then settled on Rose. “My name is Aldric.” Rose’s wolf bristled slightly. The name carried weight. “Why are you here?” she asked.

“It did nothing to me.” For some reason, I’m disappointed to find out that my blood doesn’t affect Aldric at all. “You still tasted very good,” he says as if reading my mind. “Go on, take your medicine.” I sniff the strange liquid. It smells a little like putrid swamp water. “I drink this?” “What else do you want to do with it?” “Well how should I know?
