With a frustrated sigh, I snap the book shut and walk out of the library only to see Naya in the hall. “Oh. Hi.” She tells me when she spots me. “How are you?” “Well. I have been fine.” I say, “You?”

“I need some air.” Ignoring their calls, I walked away from the table, the laughter and music fading behind me. Each step felt heavier than the last, and I pushed through the crowd, searching for an exit. The hall felt suffocating, a reminder of everything I lacked. I stepped outside into the cool night air, the stars twinkling above—a stark contrast to the turmoil inside.

As if to understand what I need at the moment, Neylan increased the pace till my load shoots onto the floor. Leaving me gasping for air.
