Chapter 1 Darkness. Nothing to see. No light, no shadows, nothing. I tried to feel out to make sure I wouldn’t fall and get hurt, but there was nothing. Even while standing still, his presence alone was enough to make her feel unbelievably small. His face was covered by nothing but pitch-black darkness. No matter how hard she tried to focus, she couldn't make out his features. It was as though the darkness itself had swallowed his face whole, refusing to let her see even the outline of his eyes. Yet despite not being able to recognize him, she could feel the overwhelming despair radiating from him. It was suffocating. A grief so deep that it seemed capable of swallowing the entire world along with him.

I close my eyes, just for a moment, letting the quiet envelop me. But then, darkness. Complete and total darkness. It comes fast, pulling me under before I can even understand what’s happening.

The evening had grown dense, enveloped in a darkness that seemed intentional, as though the universe had schemed to hide what was coming next. There was no day. There was no night. There was just darkness. Pitch black was all she could see. Well, now that Ella thought about it, she couldn’t really see anything. For all she knew, her eyes could just be closed, and she could be staring at her eyelids.
