"I can't wait to have this baby with you." King Philip continued, rubbing her swollen stomach. Arabella coughed, climbing off the bed. The king jumped up, a frown on his face. "Bella, is everything alright?" He asked. Arabella grabbed her coat, putting it on. "I-I have to go." She said, putting her shoes on. "Did I say something wrong?" The king asked, his heart twisting in pain.

He ripped it out. “This is the only evidence we might have left! And you broke the computer!” He shoved the SD card into his own pocket. “We’ll have to pull the data back at the station. This is a mess, Jenkins! A total mess!” He stormed out of the van, yelling for someone to get the generator working. I stood there in the dim, quiet van, the other officer staring at me. My legs felt weak. That was too close. Way too close.

I didn’t understand why it had suddenly stopped working now, over breakfast, with a woman whose name I still couldn’t fully trust. I sat in my study with the same stack of papers I’d been using as a shield all morning and found I couldn’t focus on a single line of them. I hadn’t looked away first. That was the detail that kept surfacing, unwelcome, every time I tried to redirect my attention back to the trade agreements in front of me. I had held her gaze across that table for several seconds longer than any reasonable explanation required, and some part of me, if I was being honest with myself for once, hadn’t wanted to be the one to break it.
