“Here we are now. Let’s try it out.” She laughed gently. “Guess our little bean deserves a fancy welcome.” He looked at her, smile still in place. “Guess so.” They got out of the car together. As soon as they stepped inside Café Bliss, the bell above the door gave a soft jingle. Warm air greeted them—mixed with the scent of roasted beans and sweet pastries. The hum of conversations filled the room, but nothing out of place. Just a normal café on a normal day. Except it wasn’t. Not for Dominic.

The moment the chest cavity opens, the tension in my shoulders eases. “Wow you've been practicing,” he says. I let out a chuckle. “Yes.” — “Do you want to go to coffee?” Benta asks, pulling her jacket closer to her chest. The sun's rays peer over the building casting shadows over the parking lot. “Sure,” I mumble before I can change my mind. She did help me before. Her grin widens as we walk to the cafe down the street. “Thought you would say no,” she mumbles, opening the door. The cafe smells like fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls, a warmth that immediately soothes the chill clinging to my skin.

He turned and walked away without another word, leaving Thea to her own ragged breathing. She takes a sip of her latte discreetly and glances at her second phone for any message.

“Well, crap. I’ll have to go grab something—” “You don’t have to go back to that cursed room for anything.” Celeste dashes across her room, peeling open her closet doors. She stands back, waving into it. “Pick anything you like.” “Okay, so while you pretty girls get ready, I’m going to grab some caffeine from the cafeteria to go. Do you two want anything?” Nate asks. “Mocha with extra cream,” Celeste replies in an instant. When Nate looks at me, I offer him a sheepish grin. “Anything suffocated with caffeine.”

Luckily we had arrived at the tiny little coffee shop from the other day. 'Brandy's bakes' was the name in black cursive writing against a baby pink background. It had the pretty circular logo on each of the three windows down the side of the shop. It smelt like heaven from outside the door, hypnotising me into a magical land full of cakes and coffee. Tugging on the glass door, allowing Hope to enter first, I scanned the room for Nate.

The cafe on Maple Street was alive with a quiet buzz. Cups clinked against saucers, the hiss of the espresso machine punctuated the background hum, and the aroma of roasted beans mixed with the sweetness of fresh pastries. It was a cozy little place, one Elena had chosen with careful deliberation. Neutral ground. Public. Bright enough that shadows couldn’t creep in.

Was all Stephie hummed in reply, then she saw to preparing Carter's order, same as from the previous night. Heated milk, a dash of cinnamon, and a sprinkle of sugar. Placing the cup in a holder, Stephie grabbed her purse, phone and keys. Placing her personal baseball cap which sported the Cafe's logo on her scalp to shield from the afternoon sun, Stephie left the café and headed towards the center of the city, where the Barlowe Industries Building nearly tickled the skyline in comparison to the other smaller establishments in town.

The cafe was located at a street close to her precint. As Detective Sophia entered the cafe, she noticed the warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air. The sound of a soft jazz tune playing in the background created a cozy ambiance. The cafe was dimly lit, with small, circular tables scattered throughout the room. The walls were decorated with rustic wooden panels, giving the cafe a vintage feel. A large chalkboard hung behind the counter, displaying the different types of coffee and snacks available. A few people were sitting at the tables, chatting and sipping their drinks, while others were typing away on their laptops.

Peter said again, steadier this time. Brett laughed. “Wow. I’m honored.” They took a corner table at a café that pretended not to notice the cold. The waitress handed out menus with a smile that said she’d seen every kind of Sunday. Brett immediately ordered a croissant, Peter asked for black coffee, and Celeste requested tea, her voice softer than usual in the warmth. The heater rattled above their heads, humming in time with the clink of cups and the scratch of spoons on stoneware.

“Look at you—barely even dying.” He snorts, elbowing me lightly in the ribs. “I’m one sneeze away from cardiac arrest, thanks. You owe me caffeine.” “Fair enough,” I laugh. “There’s that little spot two blocks down—Bean & Leaf.” “Yeah, sure,” he nods. A few minutes later, we push through the door of Bean & Leaf, the bell jingling overhead. The place smells like heaven with warm pastry and a hint of cinnamon. It’s busy but not packed, soft indie music playing, a couple of college kids hunched over laptops in the corner.
