I roll over, slinging my arm out over the pups and trapping at least one wriggling little body beneath me. “Mommy, wake up!” They exclaim, giggling delightedly. “It’s Christmas!” I mutter a bit more, groggily cracking one eyelid. “Wha’s happening?” “Mommy, it’s Christmas!” They cry again. “Christmas?” I repeat, sitting up now and stretching. “Are you sure, wasn’t that yesterday?”

Alicia said, hugging me tightly. "Merry Christmas to you too, Alicia," I replied, hugging her back. We sat there for a moment, enjoying the peace and quiet of the night. Then, Barnes poked his head into the room, a twinkle in his eye. "Girls, I think it's time for a little Christmas surprise," he said, a sly grin spreading across his face. It morphed into anxiety, fear, self-doubt, and countless sleepless nights. I looked at my cold, swollen fingers, then slowly asked, "Ivano, did you have a happy Christmas?" Caught off guard by my response, the other end of the line went quiet. All the lectures he'd planned were suddenly stuck in his throat. "I can't wait for Christmas," I sang the whole day, we're off work, we get a day off since it's almost Christmas, even the school is closed, it's not a full school yet, it's just a couple class but soon, soon my love, I think to myself with a chuckle. "You need to be dressed by now, I sent Daddy here twenty minutes ago," Papa says coming toward my room where I've been hiding, I love my red onesie and I don't want to take it off yet, why won't they just take me like that.

Where she gets her energy from I'll never know but I'm loving every moment of watching her. The next few hours consist of showers, matching Christmas pyjamas, takeout, sweets, popcorn and a movie called The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I'd never heard of it before but I loved every minute of it and so did Nina. "It's almost 9 pm and way past someone's bedtime."
