The woman behind the desk looks me up and down like I'm something stuck to her shoe. She hands me a schedule without a word, then dismisses me with a flick of her wrist. Welcome to elite education. First period is Advanced Literature. I slip into a seat in the back, hoping for invisibility. The teacher, an older man with kind eyes and wire-rimmed glasses, introduces me to the class. "Everyone, we have a new student joining us. Aria Hayes, please stand."

"He's just a classmate from university." She turned to the assistant beside her and said, "Please escort this gentleman out. Don't let him interrupt everyone's work." I looked at her in disbelief, but her eyes were entirely on Hector. When the assistant came to ask me to leave, Quinn only focused on holding Hector's hand. "Let's go, honey. We should get to the prenatal checkup." Hector lowered his head and kissed her, smiling as he said, "My wife is such a good girl." As he passed me, Hector looked back. "Honey, isn't it rude to leave your classmate standing there?"

We stood there by the door and facing off to all the current members of the Elite Tier class. (Except for the two we left behind and the worn-out Franz suffering from Depression.) They were all smiling and giggling and shouted in a loud voice.

“An elite talk more of a sub. What other reason would he have for driving you to school? Maybe one of the students put him up to it.” I frowned and pulled my hands out of hers, my head spinning with different thoughts. That didn't make any sense… “He's one of the seven. So, he can't possibly be working for another elite.” I argued. She frowned, as if angry I was arguing with her. “What if it's one of the other seven? Or maybe someone from his own family who goes here?” I couldn't say anymore and at that point, my head was spinning with everything she had said. She was making sense and she did have a point. But I didn't think professor Cain would do something as bad as what she was suggesting

The bell rang with a sharp chime, echoing through the arched hallways of Creswell Academy. Elara slid into her seat by the window in Contemporary World Affairs—once her favorite class, a lifetime ago. This room, with its polished walnut desks and floor-to-ceiling windows, had seen her at her brightest… and her most broken.

But under Elena's gaze, he couldn't bring himself to refuse. He could only nod helplessly. Elena hurried out the door to catch the bus. There were large windows with the emblem of Claw, giving a faint ray of sunshine that brightens up the room. Three chandeliers are hanging above and there are six long tables. I immediately frowned upon realizing the fact that I can't cheat easily. "Move aside." A deep voice came from behind. Mother of cow! Don't tell me I'm inside a class with my CEO?!

It is not so much jealousy, probably more recognition and longing. I check the clock. In a little while, students will spill out from their classes, so it is too late to sneak into the class. Instead I go down to the canteen and get a cup of coffee. From my usual seat at the outcast table I have a perfect view of the big room, and I see it immediately when Luca rounds the corner with the rest of the Elite. As usual Julie is not far away from him and I have to watch as they talk and laugh together.

Her clique leaned close, whispering like snakes. --- Classes dragged on. The air was thick with lectures about power, wealth, and legacy. Elara barely listened. Whispers followed her everywhere. After class, as she crossed the courtyard, Alice and her girls stepped into her path. Alice’s beauty was polished sharp, her smile poisonous. “You think you can sit with Robert Sinclair?” Alice’s voice rang sweet and venomous. “I didn’t ask him,” Elara said. “You should’ve refused.” Alice snapped her fingers. Two girls lifted buckets. A sudden splash—thick mud coated Elara’s uniform, dripping heavy against the white fabric.
