The Darkness Within Kael stirred awake to the gentle light of dawn filtering through the cabin window, his arm instinctively reaching for Aria beside him. But the bed was vacant. His heart raced as his senses heightened — her scent lingered faintly, vanishing. He quickly got up, throwing on his shirt as he stepped outside into the chill of the morning. The forest lay silent, save for the leaves rustling, sharing secrets he couldn’t comprehend. Then he spotted her — standing by the riverbank, her dark hair dancing in the wind, her reflection on the water quivering like her spirit.

I say a little impatiently, she nods and approaches the laptop, Scott turns it to give her access and can carry out the transaction once she does it, she turns to me and comment “So they made it... D and you made it in...” I frown upon hearing that name, that's what they used to call Dark before joining the organization, why? He tugged at my arm. My eyes adjusted as much as they could. My vision wiggled and my body swayed, but I couldn't tear my eyes away. I was frozen. It was hard to tell if it was from terror or curiosity. My fingers grasp Mila's arms as I watched the darkness come. I knew it was over. Deep down I knew it had me. The inky blackness rolled over Mila, enveloping her other side. She started to move away from me. My heart jumped. At first I thought she was still alive, but quickly realized it was the darkness. It was taking her.

I said sleepily. He was right, I felt weak and slightly sick that my eye lid started to get heavy. At once I felt a strange cold breeze blow past that made me shiver and open my already closed eyes a little bit. I caught sight of a pale looking slim man wearing a blue tight fitted tee shirt over black leather jeans and brown jacket to my right. He was standing far far away from the group so he was obviously not a part of us, he was looking down all along but as he lifted his head, I saw a his eyes turn deep red before he disappeared completely leaving me shivering against Lucas's body.

I don’t have much food left and I’m starting to have to fill up my water bottles in the sink. Maybe they’ll just leave me here to starve, I thought. No, they said they wanted me, they have to want me for something … sex? I mean they hadn’t so far tried anything but what the hell else could they want? I took a lot of showers, since it was about the only time I felt normal. It was the only time I could close my eyes and feel like I was escaping, like I was home. I had been asleep for a while, there was no way to know how long. When I woke up it was pitch black in the room, those fuckers cut off the light!

Her back arched off the metal surface, her mouth opening in a silent cry as her eyes rolled back—white, glowing faintly. Her fingertips sparked with light. Darian’s voice dropped. “It’s beginning.” Aarin’s heart lurched. “No—no, no—Alina—stay with me!” A crack split the air—like the sound of a massive door unlocking somewhere far away. The lights in the room flickered one last time and died. Darkness swallowed them. Not normal darkness. Living darkness. Twisting. Breathing. Watching. “Aarin…” Alina’s voice drifted out—small, terrified, and echoing as if far away. “I… I can’t stop it…”

The whispers inside her suddenly made more sense. The loneliness. The fear. The despair. The abyss had not begun as a monster. It had become one. The heartbeat exploded again. BOOM. This time the crack split completely open. Darkness surged upward. Not shadow. Not smoke. Something deeper. A blackness that seemed to swallow light itself. The First Memory stepped backward. "It is waking." The former King immediately moved forward. "Then we stop it." The woman stared at him. For several long seconds. Then laughed softly.

The Deep Rooted Fire.” Zalindra’s breath caught, her magic brushing the air in a faint ripple.
