~ A M E L I A ~ I wondered if I had gotten even a minute of peaceful sleep last night, which is something I seemed to ask myself every morning I’d wake since… I can’t even remember how long. It felt like forever at this point. Those three recurring dreams taunted me every night without permitting me any relief by allowing me to force myself to wake up. Engulfed in flames, surrounded by crying newborns. Attacked by a wolf with ash fur and eyes like a demon.

“You all right?” “Yeah. It was just a dream.” James closed his eyes. “You were screaming bloody murder and your back was arched all crazy.” “Don’t worry about it,” James said, trying to diffuse his roommate’s seriousness. “I usually have the dream about once a week. Sorry to wake you.” Tres took a seat on the edge of the twin-size bed. “What’s it about?” James nodded at the single poster that graced his side of the room. When Tres looked up at it, he said, “Try to imagine falling through that. Except you’re like, thousands of feet up and the dream always ends in your death.”

In the depths of slumber, my dreams became a canvas where my mind painted vivid images of the day's events. I’m trying to calm my heart, but it’s not working. I can see the woman closing the distance quickly between us, the wide open barn door that I didn’t even notice being opened behind her letting moonlight pierce the dark room. She’s wrapping her hand around my arm as my resolve crumbles and everything is disappearing. I can barely make out her features through the dream distortion. Her eyes come through though, shining yellow and filled with rage and purpose. They bore into me, and make my soul shiver. “Run away from the pain and back to your master. You have three days before your mark will kill you.” Were the last haunting words floating through my mind as I forced out of my dream.

Winter was crying her eyes out like she could feel my pain and maybe she could. “I missed my mum, I saw her in my dreams every night, screaming and begging. The dreams always started the same way. The sound of rain, then the smell, then I feel my head get wet and my mum begins to scream. But just like that day, in that dream, I can not move. My legs are rooted to the ground and my lips are quivering in fear and cold.”

Yes, I was sleep-deprived thanks to a strange dream that never ended. “When will this nightmare end?” My hands were still shaking when I took the toothbrush, then put toothpaste on it. I started brushing my teeth and looking into what mistakes I had made until a handsome man approached me in such a dream, even though he had to die in my hands. My head weighing heavy, and my eyelids almost fell. The pain made me want to sleep again. I’m lucky that I’m used to all of this and don’t throw up like I used to.
