“Where’s Aldrian?” I said aloud, the words tasting wrong in the back of my throat. Khy looked at me sharply. Even his wolf seemed to flinch. And then—Mr. Yellow, perched on the twisted horn of a fallen beast, narrowed his eyes and dropped his usual sass. “I didn’t see him,” the rabbit said quietly, ears twitching. “Not once.” “That’s bad,” I said. “How bad?” Khy asked, rising to his feet slowly, his blade still dripping gore.

“Hands back. It will kick.” “I can.” “It will break its spine,” he said, low and firm. The sentence made me freeze. I pulled my hands back, shaking, and watched instead as Colton eased the wire with slow, careful movements, speaking under his breath, words I couldn’t hear, not English, or maybe English so low it became vibration. The rabbit went still for half a heartbeat, trembling. Colton cut the wire. The rabbit spasmed, freed, then bolted, three frantic hops into the brush before it collapsed behind a clump of leaves, breathing hard.

It continues to shake and screech loudly until we begin to see bits of its body decaying, little by little, slowly, leaving the rabbit in agonizing pain. The once-white fur turns into black, brown, and green. The body continues to decay until there is nothing left but rot and dust.
