AVA’S POV Fear, unlike anything I’ve ever experienced made my skin crawl and my heart lodged in my throat. Vincenzo pulled the trigger. He did. He wanted to have me killed, wasn’t that his intention? (Caelum’s POV) We fell. The world tilted violently, mud, rain, and rock cascading around us, and for a moment, the only sound was the deafening roar of the chasm swallowing the ridge. Saphira’s hand was locked in mine, unyielding. I felt her heartbeat hammering against my palm, steady, real an anchor in the chaos. “Hold on!” I yelled, gripping her tighter as we tumbled. Time fractured. Rain blurred into firelight, thunder mixed with shouts, and the fissure stretched endlessly beneath us. I had no idea if we would survive the fall but instinct screamed that letting go was not an option.

"You're here, aren't you? What's going to happen to me?" Leo stepped closer to him, cornering Archer against the table. As he lowered his eyes, meeting Archer's gentle, smiling gaze, Leo felt the burning feeling in his chest intensify. However, he refused to lose to Archer. So, he took the wine glass and finished everything, spiked wine and all, with Archer's eyes on him. "Something terrible's about to happen," Leo said. "Aren't you going to run, Archie?" Archer shoved Leo aside. Leo immediately froze in place, not daring to turn around and watch Archer leave. The drug was starting to take effect on his body, but Leo's blood had already run cold.

The fortress groaned, shaking violently, echoing like a death rattle through the underground chamber. I landed, breathless, energy thrumming, heart hammering. The agony was so intense that I couldn’t stop myself from groaning. Sweat and tears poured out uncontrollably, soaking my clothes in seconds.

Next morning Roy woke up with bags under his eyes but enthusiastically. He recited the book all while getting ready to meet Jeremy at the bookstore. I listened intently to Gage as he tried to acquaint me with everything that he thought I needed to know about this post-apocalyptic world and the group of humans that he’d managed to endure with after the numerous nuclear explosions. At any rate, my eyelids kept drooping shut for longer periods of time as he went on, and it got to the point where I couldn’t pull them back open. I nodded off somewhere in the middle of his monologue, knowing I wouldn’t remember half of what he’d said tomorrow. My dream took on a lifelike quality as I felt hot lips press against the tender spot behind my ear, and I swore I could feel teeth nibbling on my earlobe a second later.

I stopped crying after several hours and JD stayed with me the whole time. Before long, the day finally ended. This marked the end of whatever illusion I had of ever being with Adrian and the end of The Decadence of The Fallen as well.
