I shouted to the taxi driver who was waiting for me in the driver's seat. I reached into my handbag and started looking for a tissue to wipe my right eye which was now starting to get watery and red. I feel like taking off my eyeballs for a moment and keeping them in my bag for a while, because they sting and itch. I don't know how to get rid of the pain and itching in my eyes anymore. Looks like I have to use my white glasses to protect my red right eye.

“Alternatively, you could give up, and I will open up a path into the realm of Hades.” Ignoring him, I took a deep breath and dove into the sand. Once I was completely submerged, it felt more like wading through jelly or cordial that had thickened in the sun. I didn’t dare open my eyes. Decades of sand encrusted in my corneas had taught me that it was a bitch to remove.

I stood up, and went to my vanity, I grab a cotton and try to remove it, but it was no use, it was still there, intact, like a glue. I was still standing, thinking of what to do, but my view became blurry, and in just a moment, I feel a burning sensation on my both eyes. “Ahh!” my legs weakened, that I can’t feel it already, I heard a loud thud, and my body ache for a while, but the pain on my eyes takes over, “Fuck, fuck!” I can’t describe the pain, I wanted to pull off my eyeballs, and put it on a cold water. Ah! Fuck! Damn, it’s fucking painful!

One single, quick blow right at his Adam's apple. It’s all a whir of mere seconds, as though I’m in slow motion and the world is speeding around me. My vision blurry with tears and my left eye is burning so bad it’s streaming. All I can see as I try to acclimatise is the fluid form of a trained fighter, a silent deadly movement and intimidating presence.

My heart thumps frantically, adrenaline mixing with fear as I wipe off sweaty palms on my shirt. My eyelids twitch, breathing turning ragged when I feel a force from behind me. Black fog lifts from above me, a gust of wind blowing alongside, sweeping gravel and sand into the air so that it forms very small tornados. Loose curls dance to the pressure, blocking part of my vision, dust gathering in my nose. I barely blink when the fog clears completely, its replacement a bluish cloud that seems to blend into the ground like a backdrop.

My cheeks show redness, my jaw remains tight, and my eyes burn with intensity. I push the door open.

Why does it feel real and familiar? I blinked my eyes many times, but what surprised me the most was that my eyes started to get blurry. That’s when I realized that I was crying.

I yelped, slapped both hands over my face bad idea, because the sprained one screamed in protest and started pacing in tight circles, eyes watering so hard tears ran down my wrists. “Fuck fuck ow, ow, ow what the hell…. ” I squeezed them shut, paced faster, bouncing on my toes like that would help. It didn’t. Everything blurred red and black. I tripped over my own discarded trousers, caught myself on the desk, knocked a pencil cup flying. Pens everywhere. Classic. “Get it together, Solange, it’s just…. dry eyes or some shit .. breathe… ” I forced them open again, blinking like crazy, tears streaming. The room swam. I groped for my phone on the desk, almost dropped it, finally got it unlocked

Not because I told them to, but like something inside me pushed them from the inside. They peeled open a bit, like they were rusted shut. Light stabbed through the space and the abruptness in it, almost made my eyes burn. Everything was a blur — bright, white, and painful. Things that I couldn’t quite make out but I heard a sound, like a machine beeping somewhere close to me or let's say next to me. It was too much. I panicked and my eyes slammed shut again on their own. I stayed like that for a few seconds, breathing in air that felt strange and cold as it entered my lungs. Something was on my face…my nose…my mouth. It felt thick, plastic and heavy. It actually made the air feel different.
