They seem so far away. After a while of mental debating, I reluctantly crawl out of bed and draw the curtains letting in the sunlight. The bright rays shine directly into my eyes, temporarily blinding me. I can feel a burning sensation at the back of my eyes. I blink a few times for my eyes to adjust to the harsh light. "God damnit!" I mutter slowly backing away from the window. "Fuck!"

My mother's weak voice said. "Will she ever be able to see again?" My mother asked rubbing my hand. The doctor sighed, "I don't think it's possible." My breath hitched. What? I may never see again? How did this happen? What did I do to deserve this? ****

I scrunched my nose trying to understand why her face seemed panic stricken. I looked at her questioningly. “Sandi!” She whispered, “Your eyes!” “Wh… what? What happened to my eyes?” I asked a little self consciously. “They are glowing! …" She whispered. “They are glowing with silver light!”

I couldn't help but cry silently. Why? Why me? I haven't done anything, my family hasn't down anything wrong, why are we being punished then? What did I do to deserve this? *sob* "Enough with the crocodile tears, no one's watching". My head jolted towards that voice as tears volunteer escaped. He stood there at the door frame, in his boxers and watched me intensely. I felt instantly uncomfortable when his eyes started to scan me like an object. He moved closer towards me as I cautiously took each step back, hitting the wall as he closed the gap between us.

Shaking the sand from my curly locks and dusting off my clothing. I leaned over to cough up, while reaching inside of my dirty, torn shirt and grabbed the inside of my bra to wipe the sand off my eyes. It was maybe the cleanest part of my whole shabby wardrobe that I could trust to put to my face. I blinked a few times, gazing at the grass underneath me. Looking around, I was really hoping to find a pond or river near by. I desperately needed to get cleaned. I can still feel sand in my eyes when I blinked.

My throat was already starting to get itchy so bad that I scraped my neck with much enthusiasm, hoping I’d be relieved, but instead, it only worsened. When it finally worked I blinked several times and then I gasped. “My eyes! Oh no I slept with my eyes in,” I shouted, sitting up suddenly. I quickly put my finger in my eye and tried to take out the offending piece of plastic that would probably now be glued to me. But I couldn’t find anything. I tried the other eye, same thing. I blinked several more times and gaped at my hand, then beyond. Normally, I can’t see a damn thing past my hand without a heavy prescription. I needed to further explore this.

I close my eyes because of what she is doing, so she lightly pinches my arm. “Don’t keep your eyes closed! I’m blowing your eyes to get rid of the sand!” she warned me. I gave her a nod and followed her I just stood up straight as she continued to blow into my sand-covered eye.

Changed. My skin itches all over, like I've outgrown it somehow. The sensation is maddening, making me want to claw at myself. I stumble to the bathroom, flipping on the harsh fluorescent light. The face that stares back at me from the mirror is mine, but not quite. My eyes—they're different. Around the pupils, flecks of silver dance like tiny stars caught in the brown of my irises. I blink hard, rub my eyes, look again. The silver flecks remain.
