It simply disintegrated, then reappeared back in the car. “Sick bastard,” I spat. He'd been stalking me. I tore a slim black book from the rat pile. Book of Psychopomps was etched on it in gold ink. Numbers, emails, and old-fashioned addresses accompanied names, written in no apparent order. I rifled through the pages: “Old farts: ODIN, MORRIGAN, YAMA, HERMES....” and “New pests: ANAESTHESIA, AIDS, SANTA MUERTE...” A red ribbon marked a page at the back. “Accessories: SHANNON PARKER.”

Staring at him she heard him say, “Now take my hand and take me inside. You know you should welcome me properly right?” She didn’t want to do that. Why would she ever want to touch him? How dare he even think that she would want him back in her life after all that he had done. But to her surprise she felt a pressure on her hand and not leaving eye contact she slowly moved her hand up to his, feeling the pain from the exertion she was putting on her own mind to try and defy him. Was she always like this? Was this truly who she was? What happened to the killer that didn’t fear anyone?

You either died or killed whoever was controlling the chips. “El, show him the diaries, I have to go see someone.” I was only half there, my mind someplace else, so my words were mumbled and strained. I didn't know how much time passed before my body started feeling lighter. When I opened my eyes, I was floating above everything. Had I escaped? Then I looked down. My body was still on the firewood pile. Bruised all over. Neck bent wrong. Head hanging limp like a broken doll. Good news—I'd escaped that village. Bad news—I was already dead. When I got home, Mom was knitting on the couch. Dad stood by the window, anxious. "It's getting late. Why isn't Kaia home yet? What did she say when she called?"
