"There is a variable," Cale said suddenly.
"What variable?"
"The dark lines." Cale pointed to empty space on the paper. "Not the walls. The other lines."
"There are no other lines, Cale. That's just paper."
"No." Cale looked up. His eyes were wide, dilated again. "Not on the paper. On the day."
He looked past Elion, staring at the air above the kitchen island.
"Black threads," Cale murmured. "Thick. Oily. They are dripping."
