They’re standing to the side, giving me an unobstructed view of the painting. Like Nila’s other art, it’s mostly in shades of gray and black, but the shapes here are sharper, easier to recognize. The bottom part shows piles of rocks, parts of buildings, and other debris. White smoke clouds are scattered throughout. Above the central pile of debris, there’s a tall figure with huge devil horns. The figure is also black and gray and holds a large sledgehammer in his right hand, as if he’s about to swing it. Maybe interiors were where my voice lived. As I started blocking in the portrait I’d planned next, a different image took over. Instead of the shadowy figure in a suit, I painted a knight. Not generic armor—silver plates catching dramatic light, a half-raised visor revealing steady, familiar eyes. He had protected me when I was vulnerable, fed me when I was shaky, given me space to breathe. The knight wasn’t just gratitude. It was how I secretly saw him. How I wanted to see him. And that vision wasn’t straight. Not even close.

I removed them slowly, using an empty wall for support, and then grabbed them in one hand, while continuing to walk around barefoot. It was made from my favorite colors--black and white, spilled on the canvas in a magical way, their fight frozen in time for all to admire. It wasn’t a picture of something, it was just paint, covering the white space in a stunning way, hypnotizing you by its peculiar shapes. I loved how the white was invading the space of the black, mixing in places to create many shades of gray.
