“Thanks,” the boy murmured.
Sorine let out a laugh.
We worked together all afternoon.
Arsel installed low shelves so the children could reach the storybooks without asking for help. I sorted books, blankets, and soft-textured toys. Sorine chose the corner by the window because, as she put it, “If you’re sad, looking at trees helps keep sadness from taking over everything.”
Clara heard that and had to step outside for a moment.
Arsel built a small shelf, and I handed him tools. Our fingers brushed every time I gave him a screw, a pencil, or a tape measure. The first time was an accident. The second, maybe. The third time, it fooled no one.
