Her copper mane was utterly still, and she was trading nervous, confused glances with Eric, her expression a clear question: What’s so funny? The laughter died instantly in my throat. The realization was a cold, hard stone sinking to the bottom of my stomach. The joke, the absolutely magnificent, sidesplitting joke, was entirely on me. I placed the napkin down with slow, deliberate precision. I leaned forward, my elbows resting on the table, my eyes narrowed, instantly glacial. The predatory focus that had made me billions settled over my features like a polished visor. “Oh,” I said, the single word soft, lethal, and very, very serious. “You’re serious.”

He hesitated, watching her for a moment, all through the time he looked at her, he saw how her face was; it was lined with seriousness. “Are you serious about that?” He asked, squinting his eyes for some moment. “You should know fully well that there are times when people don't joke.” “I take everything seriously, including everyday,” she answered in a brusque tone. “And besides, I've never seen you joke, so why would I?” “You might never know,” he shrugged, heaving a huge sigh. “But wait, there's something I'm not understanding here, is it that you are willing to employ me, or you have someone who-”

I fixed him with a straight face, trying to make it obvious that I wasn't joking. "You're not serious," he muttered again as our gazes locked. I didn't even bat an eye, and his squint disappeared. "You're not joking?" he asked, looking at me questioningly. "I'm serious," I replied, placing my hands on my waist. I saw a flicker of shock flash through his eyes, but it vanished almost immediately. He continued to stare at me with an unfathomable expression on his face before he turned away. "Hmm... Well, that's odd. You're odd," he commented.

I studied his face, searching for even the smallest hint of a joke. There was none. My laughter slowly died. “Wait… you’re actually serious?”

The response came back, a bit shocked then laughter came right after like this was some joke. “I don’t sound like I’m joking, am I?” Can they just cut the jokes off, there’s nothing funny about this and in fact I was damn too sensitive right now and anything could easily piss me off. Why did I even allow that dude to get to me so badly even when he was just my employee. A bloody damn dude that was on my payroll and had freaking guts to say rubbish to my face. “You don't actually, you sound very serious right now.” The voice rearranged, getting my mood right.

Zack Moller, one of my friends, asked curiously, "Ryan, are you serious?" I downed a drink and responded, "Dead serious. It's over." The group exhaled in relief. "Honestly, Ryan, you've wasted two years of your life. We've warned you so many times, but you were so stubborn, like you were cursed or something." "I saw Jen with another guy just a few days ago," one of them chimed in. I glanced at him, and he immediately clammed up. Zack patted my shoulder and tried to comfort me. "Alright, man. Let's chill tonight and blow off some steam. Do you want to hit up another spot?"

“Why am I hearing nonsense?” “You’re not hearing nonsense,” Jabco said firmly. “I’m serious. Let’s get married.” She looked at him like she was trying to figure out if he’d hit his head somewhere. His face was calm, tense, but serious. No hint of a joke. Then she laughed. She really couldn’t stop it. “Oh God…” “What’s so funny?” Jabco’s expression hardened. He didn’t find this amusing at all. He was tired. Tired of the tight feeling in his chest, tired of seeing her with other men, tired of pretending he didn’t care.

I thought as I walked over to the drawer. "An impasta," Aiden said as I turned around, his face serious. I stared at him in disbelief. Did he just say a joke in the weirdest way ever? "What?" I said trying to process his answer, my face unable to contain my emotions much longer from the seriousness on his face. I couldn't help it. I busted out laughing, my hand flying to my mouth to try and stifle the sound. It wasn't that the joke was particularly funny, but the contrast between his serious expression and the lighthearted nature of the joke was just too much for me to handle.

Alex gulped as he started backing away. “Did I whisper? I heard myself pretty well. Didn’t you hear what I said?” I asked out loud. Jake shivered after seeing the look on my face. I’ve always been told that I look scary when I’m serious. I was struggling to keep my composure when I saw their fallen faces. It was getting hard to keep my face as serious as possible when the constipated look on Jake’s face deepened. His red face was so funny that my composure dissipated into thin air.

I tell him m with a grunt. “A joke. I understand you're sad that I want to stay away but can you refrain from calling our relationship a joke?" The chuckles turn into full blown laughter. Well someone is happy with women. Why would he not? “You are an idiot." “Okay now you are just jealous." And they laugh again. There is nothing remotely funny about this clown so I do not understand what they keep laughing at. “Can you be serious for once? I need to ask you about something."
