She was being flagged down by at least three different groups. I finished my meals and ale after about and hour of musing in the main room. I passed the time by bringing out the black leather-bound book out of my pack. It was my personal gift to myself. My own spell book. It only had two cantrips inside of it right now but I was excited about the space I would be filling up. There was plenty of room to add as many spells as I wanted. I could easily add in a hundred spells before I was tapped for space.

Books surrounded me everywhere and my fingers brushed lightly over spines as I walked deeper between the shelves. I spotted classics I’d read years ago beside titles I’d only dreamed of finding one day and an entire collections of Shakespeare. The scent of old paper and leather wrapped around me like warmth then my eyes landed on a familiar row of books, Harry Potter. I reached out instinctively and touched the first book gently because books and music had saved me more times than anyone would ever know. When loneliness became suffocating and fear swallowed everything, stories gave me somewhere else to breathe. I closed my eyes briefly and inhaled deeply.

I needed a few more weeks to digest that accident. Determined, I wheeled back towards the shelves and reached out for the book but the shelf was too high and I only managed to touch the cover. I shook my head in frustration and tried again, pulling my arm even further and got hold of the cover. Absorbed, I forgot all about the childrens' books piled in front of my book and the more I pulled Harry Potter towards me, the more the other books would tip dangerously over my head. I gave one last harsh pull and the pile of books came tumbling down. I screamed, ducking for cover and waited for them to pound me but they never did.

H U N T E R J O N E S I was reading the second Harry Potter book while leaning against the wall in the alley with Ty on my side. I knew Mey had asked me to read the Goblet of Fire to figure out the three unforgivable curses, but after picking the book randomly, I felt that I owed it to the author to read it from the first book. How I yearned for the good old days when I hopped about the bookshop, checking for story books and picking the ones with the most colorful and captivating covers and titles. It was so much fun and It was definitely in my plans for my future kids when I had my own family. I read books to escape reality, to keep myself busy, to keep my mind off overthinking, and to improve my vocabulary and speech. I flipped my fingers over the books, deliberating on which would be my read for the weekend. I had all seven books in the Harry Potter series and I had read only three. With the aid of my thumb and my index fingers, I picked out the book, ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.’

Then I looked around some more and picked up Floca’s Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11, Lewis’s The Wolf, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Dahl’s Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and a few others. I paused at the Harry Potter series, but while the girls were old enough, being werewolves, for the story, I knew the sizes of the books would put them off. Next year, I thought. They’d have handled textbooks by then and wouldn’t be so rapidly opposed to books an inch thick or more.
