Alaric’s face went pale, and he fell to his knees. The shadow was covering him like a blanket of ink.

The monster pulled its arm back, ready to drive the fatal nail into Lucas. “No!” I screamed. I stepped forward and stretched my hand out toward the beast. I did not know what I was doing, but a sudden, blinding heat surged through my veins. Bright beams of light lasers flowed directly from my palms. The bright light struck the monster right in the chest and zapped it with a loud crackling sound. The beast released a deafening screech before it fell backward. It hit the dirt with a heavy thud and died instantly, its body smoking from the blast. It disintegrated into dust.

No longer did the creature have its fierce predatory expression, or any hint of violence whatsoever.
