Lizhe treated me like i was nothing
she continued looking down.
“But for me to be at peace with myself… I have to say it.”
Her voice cracked, and I could see her hands trembling.
“I’m sorry for not being a better mother to you… and even to you, Alice.”
“Mum, please—” I urged, placing my hand over hers.
“I’m sorry,” she said again, tears spilling freely. “I owe you both an apology, especially to you, Alia.”
“I know I made life miserable for you. I called your children bad names. When you needed my hand, I turned my back and shut the door.”
