"Zergs have corrosive blood! Their shells are hard! They are immune to bullets! Normal people can't kill them!" "Can or can't, we'll see after I try," I say, eyeing the joint between the monster's head and body. I kick off the wall, launching myself into the air. "And who said I was normal?" The Zerg opens its mandibles. I catch its antennae mid-air and swing myself onto its back. I flip the axe in my hand. Thwack. I drive the blade precisely into the gap in its neck armor. I hold onto the handle for dear life as the monster thrashes. I twist the blade. Green slime sprays out. I dodge to the side, avoiding the corrosive splash. Below me, I can feel the axe handle melting from the acid.

"With time, we'll get used to them." When we got home, I told Mom the stories the gas man had shared, but she shrugged it off. "It's just a harmless superstition, baby. Nothing is happening here. Can't you see? This place is amazing." Well, I guess she was right. But the way the townspeople told the stories, with wide eyes, and hushed tones.... it made it feel like more, than just bedtime stories. But despite all that... I never believed in monsters. Ghosts? Maybe. Witches? Of course. But vampires and werewolves? Please.... what a laugh. I may have a flair for the dramatic, but I had my limits.

This was not just a home. It was a vault of power. A graveyard of empires. A place where monsters were not born—but made. And as the door shut behind us with a soft, final click, I knew one thing with terrifying certainty: Whatever we were about to ask… This place had heard it before.

Clenching her jaw, she snarled, "You lunatic! You think I've been cheating on you all along, huh? Fine. So be it. Not only am I divorcing you, but I'm going to make you pay for everything you did to those women!" She shoved me toward the police officers and screeched, "I don't want him anymore! Since he's a serial rapist who hurt so many women, trash like him should be put in prison!" I had barely taken a single step forward when Harvey rushed at me like a madman and grabbed me by the collar. Through gritted teeth, he snarled, "You're a monster, Cameron! You don't deserve to be with Nat!" As the police placed me in handcuffs, I thought to myself that this matter would be settled soon enough.

“Not of Orin, or even Cole. I’m scared of what’s inside me. Of what I almost became.” Dante’s gaze softened, and he stepped closer until he was standing right in front of me. “What you became was stronger than anything I’ve ever seen,” he said quietly. “You fought off Orin’s magic, Crystal. You’re more powerful than you know.” “I don’t want to be a monster,” I whispered, the fear still gnawing at me. “I don’t want to lose myself.” “You won’t,” Dante said firmly, his hand reaching out to gently cup my cheek. “I won’t let that happen. None of us will.”

“That sounds pretty good, it's been a long time since I took a walk.” “You talk as if you know you're going to be a free man.” “I am going to be walking away a free man.” “And how do you know this?” “Because once I tell my story, you’d have no choice but to charge the real monsters.” “The real monsters?” “Yes, the real monsters .” “What have these people done to deserve the title monsters?” “Wouldn’t you like to know.” “Yes we’d all like to.” “Then ask me the question.” “What question?”

“Oh, sweetheart. Are you reading those fantasy novels again?” I smiled faintly, but pushed on. “I mean seriously. Not fairy-tale stuff. But real. Like… what if they’re just hiding? Shapeshifters, vampires, witches… What if they’ve always been here?” She wiped her hands on a dish towel, still chuckling. “Monsters only exist in children’s minds, that’s why bedtime stories exist, to teach lessons and lull them to sleep. It’s just imagination. Like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.”
