The last thing I need is to accidentally block someone I actually want to hear from. And yet, deep down, I know I’m probably too late. Everyone—everyone—is involved. How could I have missed the signs? Maybe I’m just so stupidly trusting. Or maybe I’m just that good at ignoring red flags when I’m tired of seeing them. Whatever it is, I’m over it. Over him. Over all of it. I stand up, tossing my coffee cup into the trash, and make my way out of the park. The paranoia is creeping in now, though. I start glancing around, my neck tingling with that awful sensation you get when you feel like you’re being watched.

He kept moving closer, then I stepped back along side down to the dining room. I reached for the little fruit knife on the table, then mum held me up as I was about to stab him. And now, he was gone. "Where is he? He need to die by my hands mum, and he just run off because he is scared of me." "No one was here Ai, it is your hallucination just again." Mum let go of the hand. She pressed her palm on my cheek in a verge of tears. "Mum! The same thing that – that fuck neurologist said. I hate to hear that I am mad mum because I am not." I paced down to the living room as I ran my finger over my hair.

“Nothing.” “Doesn’t look like nothing.” He looked away, his arms dangling over the sides. “I know you don’t want to listen to me insult your father, so let’s leave it where it lies.” He reached for his wine and took a drink. “He’s just paranoid, always been that way.” “They say when people are paranoid about you crossing them, it’s because they’ve already thought about crossing you.” “What are you saying?” “That people who are suspicious about their partners cheating are the ones already doing the cheating.”

What is it? "Whatever it is that you feel the urge to let me know, Dan, say it straight to my face right now!" I shoot, and he smirks. "Don't tell me you haven't told her!" He says to Deep. Tell me? Paranoia is surging into me in savage spurts and I hate to say that I don't know who is more irksome right now. Is it this weird Dan, who looks like he has a bomb to blow on me but is bent on playing with my brain first while irritating Deep, or is it this other guy that seems like he is willing to do anything to prevent Dan from revealing whatever he is itching to reveal? The thought that he might be hiding something from me stings like a dagger in my heart.

It wa⁠s in the too-r​egular inter‍vals of Dr. Evans’s “wellnes⁠s checks.” I‍t was in the faint​, medicinal sm​ell that lingered‌ in t⁠he air, masking the⁠ familiar sce‌nt of lem​o⁠n p‌olish and old mone‍y. I was drowning in a silent, sancti⁠o​ne⁠d panic.

Aaron seems to think about that for a minute before nodding his head and staring off into the distance. "Do you think that Natalie can really defeat this guy? He seems pretty crazy!" I turn to look at him and I can see the fear pouring off him like sweat after a hot day. Even his eyes look concerned the dullness in colour, not only to do with lack of sleep, but fear and weariness. "I have always believed that my friend was destined for great things. When she started having weird dreams I knew that something was happening. I researched every night. I didn't find it until I came across the prophecy."

I could barely speak. The words hit me so hard I actually stopped breathing for a second. I stared at him like I had misheard or maybe my ears had decided to twist the word into something uglier than what he actually said. “What do you mean… paranoid?” “You’re paranoid, Lana.” he answered, his eyes staring deep in my being I shook my head fervently. “No, what the hell does that even mean?” He exhaled through his nose and that made it worse. I could feel heat crawling up my neck.

(Noah’s Pov) I’m not saying I regret hacking that crypto wallet. I’m just saying maybe—maybe—I should’ve waited until I wasn’t two Red Bulls deep and laughing at memes with my socks half off. Because now, I’m paranoid. Like... maybe-the-laptop-is-staring-at-me paranoid. But hey, what’s life without a little self-sabotage? “Yo, tell me again how you're not going to prison?” Pixel mumbles in my headset. Her voice is warped by the ambient hum of my dying PC fan, but still very judgmental.

I hadn't thought about that in years. "Someone I still trust," I repeated. I looked up at Elias. "That's a very deliberate thing to say to someone you just met." "Yes," he said. "It is." "You're trying to make me paranoid." "I'm trying to make you careful. There's a difference." He poured water into his own glass and drank. "Paranoid means you suspect everyone without reason. Careful means you've been given a reason and you're acting on it. I'm giving you a reason."

Paranoia does not announce itself. It does not arrive with a loud noise or a dramatic moment. It seeps in. Through the cracks. Through the silences. Through the look someone holds half a second too long or the conversation that dies when you enter a room. It is invisible and it is everywhere and once it starts it does not stop on its own. I watched it move through the compound over the next twenty-four hours like smoke under a door.
