Just stopped bringing food for two days straight. If it weren’t for Ana, the only kind soul in this place, I think I’d be dead by now. She sneaks me real food. Crackers. Vitamins. “I shouldn’t be doing this,” she whispers, eyes darting toward the camera. “But you don’t deserve this.” I don’t know how she knows. Maybe she’s been where I am. I’ve lost so much weight. My ribs show. My hair is falling out in clumps, clogging the tiny drain in the corner. I stare at myself in the mirror and barely recognize the girl staring back.

The room fell momentarily silent, the echoes of Ana's words hanging in the air. Some of the onlookers shifted uncomfortably, their eyes cast downward in shame. But there were others, obstinate and unyielding, who refused to let go of their mocking laughter.

She smiled as she watched the other townspeople. “No matter how hard their lives are, they can still smile. Meanwhile, some who are well-off are not happy and are never content with what they have,” Ana said sadly as she watched the happy workers eating the food she bought. Alexis, who was also watching the workers, agreed. “That’s how it is here, lady. You have to be able to handle everything. Because if you can’t, you won’t have anything to eat.” Ana did not say anything, but she felt sad about the people’s situation and did not know what she was feeling. Revenge was on her mind, but she did not realize that there were more people with bigger problems than hers.

Dr Jerome asked and Ana frowned. Dr Jerome was right. Ana comes from a poor family. They live from hand to mouth. Getting the scholarship was the only way to further her education and become the dietician she had always dreamt of so she could start earning some good money to change her family's life. She was so happy when she got the scholarship. She announced it to her mother and sister and they rejoiced with her. She returned home that day holding a bottle of drink which they shared. That was all she could remember. Why will her family do this to her? They had lived their whole life in poverty and they only had to wait a couple of years more and she would be done with school and their life
