Pitch-black. The sky was almost pitch-black if it were not for the startling flashes and instantaneous streaks from the bolts of lightning that crack the eerie dark. Flickers of light revealed the foggy visibility brought by the heavy downpour of rain which seemed to know no respite. Drops of rain were like pellets showering the roof with percussion. The night was conquered with unrest as the howling wind cut through the towering trees in gusts, and with its rush, the thunder roared in resonance. Violent.

I pushed the door open and stepped inside and the first thing I saw was him. Of course. Chance Black. Sitting at the far end of the bar, back straight, shoulders squared, one hand wrapped around a glass. He was dressed in black again. Always black. Sleeves rolled just high enough to show the edge of a tattoo, hair pushed back from his face, eyes sharp. I froze for half a second. Then I muttered under my breath. “Of course he’s everywhere I go.”

"I missed that about you." Behind me, Jeff shifted, his presence a silent warning. Nolan’s gaze flicked to him, assessing. "Ah. You must be Jeff." Jeff didn’t offer a hand. "You must be leaving." Nolan laughed, unfazed. "I’m here to help." He pushed a file across the table. "The Consortium’s not dead. They’ve just gone deeper underground. And they’ve got a new target." I opened the file. My breath caught. It was a blueprint of a blacksite. And a list of names—scientists, financiers, mercenaries. All working on something called Project Phoenix.

Dad grabbed the nurse, throwing her out of the room alongside himself. "Well-done, Emily, you have accomplished your mission." A sinister scent emerged, a wicked laugh echoing across the room. The once blue sky was now a mixture of black and white with the moon reflecting its radiant image. Wails filled the air as a ray of light fell from the sky, hitting a mountain on the other side of town. I groaned, wincing as my hand was scorched by the flaming book. Surprisingly, the boss put the fake names instead of the real ones, probably for a matter of extreme privacy. “Found it,” I whisper when I find one under the name of Black Tiger. I take a long breath and open it with shaky hands. Part of me feels bad because I’m not respecting his privacy and another part wants to know everything in order to unravel the mystery. The contents of the file surprise me. William is a smart man indeed. He resumed everything in four simple and short lines, not giving anyone the chance to know about the agent. We proceeded through it, following a paved road that was dark from large, low hanging branches from tall thick spruce trees. The driver proceeded slowly with his headlights now on, as Reggie and I tried to see out the windows. The van had become totally black and all we could make out was the dark pavement ahead of the van. I gave up trying to see anything as the sound of yips and barks filled the dark silence. There was at least a dozen of them, wolves coming up and running back and forth in front of the van. The headlights glimmered off their coats showing different colors on each one.
