It paused, nudging its smooth head against my arm. ​I reached out and stroked its sleek skin. The dolphin dipped its body low beneath me, clearly inviting me to mount. I stretched out over its smooth back, wrapping my arms gently around its form. It carried me through the sea, taking me on a mesmerizing swim around the coastal waters. It felt magical. ​It seemed to sense the tiny life growing inside me, moving with incredible care and softness. It carried me deep out into the open ocean before circling back, guiding me safely to the shallow reef where it had first found me.

Mariana explained. “Does that mean I got into the book?” I wondered to myself. “What book?” she asked, then I looked at her. “Didn’t you see the book I’m holding?” I asked, and she shook her head. We went under the sea, and while swimming, I was amazed at the fish, dolphins, sharks, whales, and other types of fish that were under it. I have never seen fish and coral so clear and beautiful. I didn’t know how far we were until I saw the beautiful kingdom under the sea, and there I saw other mermaids with different colored tails.

Then they take a dip in the sea and snorkel along the reefs. At some point they get hungry and Aziel suggests they swim to the bow of the boat where the mood is still high. When they are helped onto the boat, Michel pushes them each with a plate full of barbecue meat and chips. “Hey, we thought dolphins showed up on this side. We saw you come up and then suddenly you were gone”, Michel laughs as he takes a big bite of his chicken leg. The sauce drips from his lips, much to the group's hilarity.

Mind you, it would be something to eat, although if the fish screamed like they did in Flatland, then eating it alive would be a traumatising experience for us both. Of course, what I summoned wouldn’t necessarily be harmless. But if I called the nearest predator to come get me, at least it would all be over fairly quickly. Previously, when I used my fish-calling ability, I was happy for it to work on anything in the water. I never tried to summon a specific type of fish. What if I tried to call for a helpful fish? The concept of ‘helpful fish’ is probably not that common outside of a Disney movie, but dolphins have been known to help people so if I could contact one...

Some fish had eyes that glowed in the dark; others had bizarre shapes, as if they had escaped from a nightmare. As they walked through the tunnel, Ploy, who was still in pain from the burn on her hand, tried to distract herself by looking at the marine life. She saw a school of small, colorful fish swimming near the glass. Their eyes looked hungry. "Look! They're so cute!" Ploy exclaimed innocently.
