Something she wished would happen soon. "Okay, mommy." Maryam picked up her book. "What are you reading?" asked May, trying to start up a new conversation. She didn't see the book's title because half of the purple cover was peeled off. "Purple Hibiscus," Maryam replied excitedly. "Written by Chimamanda Adichie, my favorite author," she added. "Isn't that too much for you? Do you even understand a word?" May thoughtfully asked.

Mirabella rolled her eyes and stretched her legs. Okay, I just want to be sure." She opened it and in there was a novel titled purple hibiscus. "Wow! Wow! wow!" She exclaimed, ecstasy written all over her face. " Purple hibiscus, I have been dying to read this book. How does he even know I like this book?" Michal expected an answer from Mirabella but none came forth, she looked at her and gave a suspicious look. " You!" She shouted and stared at her sister intently.

RED POV The morning air was thick with the scent of salt and hibiscus, a perfume I had once found exotic and now found suffocating. It clung to everything, to the linens, to my skin, a constant reminder of the island that was both my prison and my proving ground. I moved through the quiet house, my footsteps silent on the cool stone floors, a ghost in my own life. The day after the day after, the atmosphere had settled into a new kind of quiet, a working quiet that was more unsettling than the tension that had preceded it.

Although there were vicissitudes in her eyes, her calm aura made Jay speculate that she was by no means an ordinary person. Only people with extraordinary abilities could be so calm in the face of life’s ups and downs. “How can I trust you?” Jay said faintly. Priestess Zyda took out the neatly packed python from her pocket and handed it to Jay. Jay opened the package layer upon layer. The door closed with a soft click polite, almost invisible. The room was mine again. The amber wall light cast a small halo across my pillow. I lay on my side, eyes tracing the faint cracks in the ceiling paint like the dried-up rivers on a map. Night in a hospital was a kind of darkness that was never truly dark; it hovered like an unfinished promise that left you both soothed and uneasy. I pulled the blanket up to my waist, feeling the gauze brush against my skin. Outside, the wind stirred through the maple leaves, their shadows swaying silently across the curtain.

I didn't respond, just took the lead and took her towards the romance novels, and before she could ask me to choose one for her, I left her there and went back to the desk. She came back not even five minutes later and laid down three books by Nora Roberts; Savor The Moment, Daring To Dream, and The Next Always. I didn't comment, just scanned them gave her the total, took the money, kept the change like she'd asked and said goodbye. It was only after she left that I could let out a breath of genuine air. I had to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible, I didn't like what was going on and I didn't want it going on for long, or even at all.

The clearing looked different now. It had been a place of warmth once. Of quiet moonlight and aching promises, of soft lips and racing hearts. Now it felt… hollow. Not empty—never that—but expectant. As if the earth itself was waiting for what would be spilled upon it next. Blood. Magic. Memory. Love. Maybe all of it. I stepped into the grass, my boots brushing against early summer wildflowers that had no idea they were growing atop ancient bones. Nyx stirred in my chest—uneasy. Alert.

But she’s looking at the screen, a slight frown on her beautiful face. “Can you make anything of it?” I ask, looking down at the image once again. The tiny stark moon surrounded by darkness. The black shadows around the edge are beginning to claw across the page. Then the man who has tendrils of the darkness wrapped around him, curling around his arms and back, and right in the centre is the wolf with pink eyes, surrounded by pink cherry blossoms. There is a clear white area around the wolf and where the white part goes, the dark tendrils curve around it, not touching the white.

Reta went to the door and stood in front of it. I stood at a corner watching Crystal from a distance as she carefully prepared the poison. She brought a small bowl, and poured in freshwater. She brought a purple liquid in a small bottle from her pocket. She gently poured half of it into the bowl. The color of the water instantly changed to purple, exuding purple smoke from it. “Steph!” Crystal called me out in her stern voice. “Yes?” I walked closer to her. “I need you to fetch me an orange hibiscus flower.”
