Ryan walked further into the office and tied the balloons on the armrest to one of the chairs in my office. "So is there anything else you need me to do for you before I head home to on Sue?" Ryan asked and I frowned. Was it time to knock off already? I peeked at my wristwatch and saw that it was almost 9 PM. "Fuck, I have to go too. I need to bake a cake for the kids' party tomorrow." I closed my laptop and jerked up from my seat. Ryan raised his eyebrows and chuckled. "You? Bake a cake? Are you sure you can handle that, Alpha?"

“One meeting.” Ray’s face lit up. “Thursday night. Eight PM. The place is called Haven…it’s on Fifth Street downtown. Can’t miss it.” “I’ll be there.” “Good.” Ray settled back against his pillows, looking satisfied. “And Rylan? Thanks. For checking on me. For listening. For just… being human in a world that doesn’t always reward that.” “Yeah. You too.” I left the hospital feeling something I hadn’t felt in weeks. Hope. I check the time and see that Ryan and her parents are due in about 10 minutes. I start putting my papers away and setting the room up for clients. Typically, I take Tuesday mornings off for paperwork, but when Ryan’s family called me yesterday, I put them in my schedule. I knew that this was going to be a hard time for her.

Ryan dragged a hand through his hair roughly. “My dad already thinks hockey distracts me too much.” His jaw tightened slightly. “If I lose this season too then everything’s fucked.” "Hmm...you’ll survive,” I muttered softly. “Not without your help.” I looked away quickly before he noticed how much that affected me. “You still owe me,” I reminded him. Ryan smirked slightly. “What exactly do you want?” Honestly? I had no idea. The first bell rang loudly through the hallway. Ryan stepped backward slowly. “Tryouts start at four.”

Surely, he didn’t mean…. “I’ve gotta go,” Ryan said before she could ask for clarification, or a list. “My mom gets mad if she thinks I’m up past 11:00.” Beth glanced at the clock and saw it was a quarter past. She understood having heard Karen’s lectures about how important it was for Ryan’s heart that he was never tired. “Okay. Thanks, Ry.” He only nodded in response. “Glad you got to talk to Sammy.” He smiled and then pulled his window closed, lowering the blind, and Beth continued to stare at it for a few minutes until Ryan shut his light off.

He answered on the first ring, not even bothering to say hello. “Yeah, I should be there in a few hours. Everything okay there?” I asked, even though we both knew I would have heard already if it wasn’t. “Of course everything is okay! Ryan is still in RedWoods finalizing the alliance but you left the world’s best Beta and Gamma in charge. What could possibly go wrong?” He deadpanned. “I could think of a few things.” I jibed and we both laughed. “Hey, you got any plans for the night? There’s a new bar I wanna check out!”

Early in the morning. Ryan was in his office. He deliberately came early, to see if Karin kept her promise, to come early and do what she should have finished last night. The security guard guarding the front door of the office was surprised to see his arrival so early in the morning. "Good morning, Sir!" said Ryan security guard? He swiftly opened the door for Ryan. Ryan nodded his head, then walked into the elevator and not long after, he was sitting comfortably in his room. He looked at the clock on the wall and it was already 07.30 and he saw Karin coming.

"I don't care what you are. This isn't some fairy tale. You're here for a reason, so just do your part and don't make things harder than they need to be." Iris felt a lump form in her throat, but she swallowed it down, determined not to let him see her weakness. "I'm doing this for my mother." Ryan smirked coldly. "Right, and I'm doing your mother a favor. You'd do well to remember that." Before Iris could respond, Ryan glanced at his watch. "We're going to see my parents tonight. Be ready before 7 p.m." Without waiting for an answer, Ryan pressed a button on the wall. A few seconds later, there was a knock at the door. "Come in," Ryan called out.
