ARIA. Light bled from beneath his palm where it pressed hard over his chest. Silver at first, pure and bright, but laced with veins of writhing shadow that twisted like living things. They curled and recoiled before sinking into him, disappearing beneath skin and bone as if swallowed whole. The air itself seemed to ignite, burning with a shimmer that was more than sight—it was heat, vibration, pressure—an oath alive, demanding to be acknowledged.

I was back in the abyss. Tick, tick, tick. It came to an end and the darkness exploded around me. Shards fly past me. I raised my arms, shielding my face as the floor shattered below me and I was falling. I jolted awake. I gasped for breath as I felt like I was still falling. My eyes blinked, trying to adjust to the darkness of night in my room. I held the sheets tightly as I tried to ground myself. Reality slowly came into focus around me in the dark of night. My breathing slowed as I broke away from the dream and my consciousness took back over.

She didn’t flinch. She raised a hand, and the swamp trembled. Silver veins of energy pulsed through the ground, spreading like cracks in ice. The air thickened, humming with an ancient power that pressed against my chest. Then, without warning, the sky split open. A deafening roar erupted as a beam of pure energy descended, striking the ground with a force that sent me staggering. The Shadowborn disintegrated, their screeches cut off in an instant. The suffocating darkness lifted, replaced by a lingering shimmer of power.

(gesturing to the room) “—this is war. And in war, there are no second chances.” Before Sienna could respond, the sound of shattering glass filled the room. Both of them turned toward the window just as a shadow moved in the darkness. Enzo grabbed Sienna, his voice sharp. “Get down!” The crack of gunfire echoed through the room as chaos erupted around them.

With a steadying breath, Aqua placed her hands over her heart and concentrated, allowing her thoughts to drift like leaves carried on the wind. “Mom… Dad…” she whispered, her voice trembling yet resolute. “If you can hear me, please, I need you.” A tingling sensation enveloped her as the air thickened with energy, crackling around her like static electricity. The room dimmed, shadows shifting as if responding to her call. In that moment, she felt a pull—a gravitational force drawing her inward, deeper into the essence of the universe. “Let me hear you,” she urged, pouring her heart into her words. “I’m ready.”

Alessandro repeated under his breath, like a curse. And then — just like that — the air shifted again. From lunch. To business. To blood. As it always did.

I was getting really tired of Adrian repeating things back to me that I obviously had no clue about. "I—I'm sorry, Rose. Truly, I am," a serious look covered his handsome features and his tone took on a slightly more ominous note. A chill began to run through me at his sudden change and I sat up to pull my knees to my chest, bracing for what he was about to say next. "Shadow kissed is a result of someone being brought back from the dead by a Spirit user. It isn't very common but there have been recorded instances of it happening and some studies have even been documented." I tried to take a deep breath, but my body suddenly seized up. “You’re drooling, Little River.” He teases lightly, and I flush. “Sorry” I murmur, but before he can say anything, something moves beside him and moves towards me as if coming in for a hug. I scream and jump back, only to take a close look… What in the Dr. Facilier shit, is this? Is that his shadow casually coming my way? “I-uh-I…” “Back.” He says, and the shadow seems to deflate sadly and then retreat into his actual shadow.

CHAPTER 53: THE VEIL OF THE DORMANT The air in the tunnel didn't just vibrate; it shrieked.
