The shield shuddered, but didn’t yield.
“You’ve tampered with the binding,” they went on. “A bold choice. But boldness without control is just a prettier word for suicide.”
“I’m not the one who’s going to die tonight,” I said.
They laughed, low and genuine. “Prove it.”
They moved like lightning. One heartbeat they were across the courtyard; the next, a blade of pure starlight was slicing toward my chest.
The shield reacted faster than I could think, silver fire erupting between us. The impact rang through my bones, but the blade didn’t break me—it skidded, shattering into sparks.
