Lightsticks beamed brightly in the darkness, flooding the space with vibrant hues. "Silence speaks for those who listen." Kyle's magnetic voice came through as he jumped down the swing. The music gradually grew louder. "This song tells the story of a boy who took forever to understand the whispers of his silence, finally losing the girl he loves," he continued. I returned back to my hostel after I agreed to be Ryker's date for the fundraising event. Sam wasn't around when I got back, so I took off my clothes and threw on some baggy and comfortable sweats. I jumped on my bed, plugged in my earphones and worked on some assignments. As soon as Pink venom by Black Pink started to play, I closed my books and stood up from my bed. I balled my palm into a fist and used it as an imaginary mic, I sang the rubbish I knew and danced to the beat.

the Silas-Sentry boomed. The sound was like a mountain groaning. The towering white giant before me raised his blade of sterile light. This wasn't the Silas who had whispered poetry to me in the dark of the Kernel. This was a ten-story monument to corporate order, his body a polished, featureless marble that reflected the chaos of the city with a cold, mocking clarity.

A ball of pure darkness formed between his hands. Ronan flicked the fingers of one hand, and the ball expanded until it filled the hallway, wrapping around each of us in turn. The vampire woman grinned at me as I stared wide eyed at what could only be vampire magic. “It’ll keep us hidden,” she whispered to me. “So long as we’re good and quiet.” I nodded my understanding. As Ronan had pointed out, I didn’t have much choice but to be quiet. But I was careful where I stepped anyway. I couldn’t talk but I could still step on a creaky board.

Roanna knelt beside my legs, sobbing and pleading, "Miss Palmer, please… Please tell Scott to talk to me again! I really love him, and I can't live without him!" Mary burst out from the kitchen, waving a kitchen knife. "You shameless b*tch! How dare you show your face?" Roanna raised her chin in defiance, shouted, "Kill me then! The room was dark and cramped, full of clutter and an old bunk bed he dragged in from the construction site next door. Without warning, the boss lunged forward and pinned Nissa onto the lower bunk. Startled, Nissa let out muffled cries, struggling with all her might, hands pushing at his chest. The boss grew impatient and furious, cursing, "Damn it, a dumb mute like you making so much money! Who the hell are you earning it for? Walking around here every day, don't think I don't see it. You're trying to seduce me!" Nissa's eyes widened in shock.

The previous playfulness disappeared from his face as he sat frozen on his soft side, not even moving a bit. His prolonged silence thumped my heart as if it challenged me to correct the mistake I made unintentionally. However, I had no idea what I did wrong. So, taking a safer route, I closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep. That was when Cassian finally broke his silence. He grabbed my wrist, catching me off guard. “No!” he said, his voice rough. “You can’t ignore me like this.” My heart leapt to my throat as my eyes flew open, only to find shadows of darkness clouding Cassian’s features. He narrowed his dark eyes and said,

"I'm sorry, Grace. The forest really isn't safe. I have to find him. I promise I'll come back and finish this with you." I gave him a faint smile, though I could barely breathe through the pain in my chest. He would not come back once he left. That was always how it ended. As he bent down to comfort Laila, I quietly poured the bond-breaking potion into the wine glass. I walked over and held it out to him, my voice soft but firm. "Finish this, and I'll forgive you." Philip smiled and finished it in one gulp. He put the glass down and left with Laila without a second glance.
