Chapter 20: The Fire and the Birth The heat was instantaneous. It wasn't the slow creeping warmth of a summer day. It was a physical blow. The flames that erupted at the base of the steel door climbed the treated logs like a living creature. Black smoke, thick and oily, rolled across the ceiling, choking the little air left in the sealed cabin. I coughed, dropping to my knees. The smoke burned my eyes, turning the world into a blur of orange and gray.

I ran past the sculpture and down the narrow passage, hearing footsteps behind me but not caring enough to turn around. My vision blurred, making it almost impossible to see clearly or judge distances accurately. I quickly covered my nose when I saw the black smoke moving in sinuous, swirling patterns, almost like liquid darkness. It had a shimmering, oily quality, reflecting the faint light from Stalagtor’s luminescent eyes. Though the smoke was primarily black, it occasionally pulsed with eerie glows of deep purples and greens, hinting at a supernatural energy and ancient magic. Even after covering my nose, it was difficult for me to slow down my breath.

The way all parts of her body burnt as if set on fire and how she couldn’t turn it out felt like a strange dream but also so much like reality. The longer her eyes stayed shut, trying to figure out what was happening, the more the pain in her skin grew and became unbearable. Her breathing also became restricted, as if the air was cut out and every intake became a battle and she choked. Her eyes snapped open to see thick, blinding smoke covering up her chambers. The smoke had cut out her vision, so she didn’t see anything a few feet away even if she tried. It wasn’t a dream, she soon realised, and she felt trapped.

Storm's POV I could barely see anything, including my feet. The smoke had already engorged the whole room. I could see the fire on the roof and part of the walls. I had a bad feeling that the roof would give way and crush me to death, if I don't get out on time. The smoke made my eyes itch and then the coughing started. I have never felt so hot like this before. It was like I was being roasted on a hot oven. I took a deep breath but that was a mistake. My lungs burned as I fought for oxygen.

Our eyes met, the smell of snow and ash rising through my nostrils, making my eyes burn. "I won't let you."

This was how I was going to die–choked out by some demon-ass smoke from hell. Just as I was about blacking out, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me. A hand reached out and touched me on my shoulders. Then, everything went dark. My eyes shot open and I took in a long raspy breath. My lungs burned with the sudden intake of fresh air and I turned to my side, coughing. My throat itched, tears rolled down the side of my face and my head ached like hell. Hell… I looked up and turned. The smoke had settled and my home was still intact. The book still laid on the altar and there was no circle shaped fire around, neither was there any sign that there was one. It just seemed like I had dropped th

HAZEL The smell of thick smoke fills my lungs. Ashes burn the back of my throat as I try to get a decent breathe of oxygen. I can't breathe. My eyes fling open to a room full of flames. A room all too familiar to me. "Mom!" I yell out through the roar of the fire. "Dad!" I scream- making my way to my bedroom door. The smoke rolls in through the top of the door just as if a train would. I reach for the door knob whilst in pain because the metal knob is burning hot.

So if I wasn't dead, yet, what the hell was going on? I slowly peeled my eyes open, and believe me when I said it was nothing like I imagined. Smoke billowed into my eyes and mouth, and a series of coughs raked through my entire body. My eyes burned, but I just couldn't afford to keep them closed. If I wanted to get out of here alive, then it was paramount that I found out what the hell was going on. The moon goddess must have been on my side because, slowly, the smoke started to clear out. My vision was still a bit hazy, but d for after what seemed like forever, I was finally able to see what was in front of me, and it was nowhere near a pleasant sight.

The heat was oppressive, filling the small room with a suffocating warmth. Smoke billowed around me, thick and acrid, burning my throat with every breath. I coughed violently, my eyes stinging as I struggled to breathe. I was trapped, helpless, tied to the chair while the fire closed in on me. The smoke was too thick. I couldn’t see anything beyond the walls of flames. My lungs screamed for fresh air, but all I could inhale was poison. My throat felt raw, my vision blurred as black dots danced before my eyes. I screamed again, but the fire roared louder, drowning out my voice.
